AbstractAbstract
[en] Ion emission from a laserproduced plasma with very small focal spots (20 μm full 1/e width) has been investigated, charge, angle and velocity being resolved. The experiments have been performed for different polarizations and wavelengths (1.06 μm and 0.53 μm) of the laser (Nd-YAG mode locking system). In the case of p-polarization an enhancement of the total ion expansion energy by a factor of 3.5 is obtained compared with s-polarization. This is due to resonance absorption. While most of the additionally absorbed energy leads to an increase in the number of emitted ions, the velocity spectrum is reduced and the average charge is only weakly influenced. The result is quite different when the wavelength of the laser is changed instead of the polarization. For the first harmonic (0.53 μm) an increase in the ion expansion energy is likewise observed, which, however, in this case is preferentially due to an increase in the mean kinetic energy, the ablated mass remaining essentially unchanged

AbstractAbstract
[en] Vibrationally elastic scattering and vibrational excitation of H2S by electron impact has been studied for collision energies up to 10 eV in a crossed-beam experiment. In the vibrationally elastic scattering the cross sections show pronounced forward scattering and a steep increase towards small energies, characterising the influence of the direct dipole process. In contrast, the vibrational excitation is clearly dominated by resonance processes. The excitation function exhibits a narrow peak close to threshold, which is attributed to the final-state interaction of the scattering electron in the dipole field and a strong shape resonance at about 2.3 eV of 2A1 symmetry. In the shape resonance the absolute value of the total integral cross section for vibrational excitation has been found to exceed 10-15 cm2, which is about 30% of the vibrationally elastic one. AbstractAbstract
[en] The conversion efficiency of laser energy into kinetic ion energy in a laser-produced plasma has been investigated for two quite different targets: graphite and tantalum. The laser energy (intensity) varied from several mJ to 200 mJ (109 to 7 x 1010 W cm-2) which is appropriate to many applications of a laser produced ion source. The conversion efficiency as a function of the laser energy was directly determined by differential measurements of the charge, kinetic energy and angular emission distribution of the plasma ions in absolute units. Whilst for the Ta target a nearly constant efficiency of about 30% was observed, the graphite result shows an unexpectedly strong enhancement of the transfer efficiency of up to 80% in the laser intensity range around 1.5 x 1010 W cm-2. It is assumed that the results are related to the difference in the surface roughness of the targets. (author)
