AbstractAbstract
[en] Excited states in the neutron-deficient nucleus 174Pt have been identified up to spin 14. An irregular yrast sequence was observed beginning with a high 2+→0+ energy. It can be interpreted as the result of a change from a weakly-deformed ground state band, to a well-deformed rotor, near spin 6. 11 refs., 2 tabs., 4 figs

AbstractAbstract
[en] Superdeformation was first observed in the mass-190 region in 191Hg. Since then, SD bands have been found in 190-194Hg nuclei. Here we report the discovery of two such bands in 194Tl which are the first SD bands found in this mass region that are not in Hg nuclei. Subsequently, bands have been found in two Pb nuclei. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Two superdeformed (SD) bands have been found in 194Tl using the reactions 176Yb(23Na,5n) and 181Ta(18O,5n). The mass assignments were made from excitation function data. These are the first SD bands found in the mass-190 region that are not in Hg nuclei. The energies of many of the transitions of one of these new SD bands are similar in energy to those in the SD band of 192Hg. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper reports preliminary results of an attempt to observe population of superdeformed (SD) states in 193Pb. The experiment was performed in the High Energy-Resolution Array (HERA) at the 88-Inch Cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory using the reaction 174Yb(24Mg,5n)193Pb with E(24Mg) = 129 MeV and 134 MeV. HERA consisted of 20 Compton suppressed intrinsic Ge detectors and an inner bismuth germanate (BGO) ball with 40 elements used primarily for total (sum BGO + Ge) γ-ray energy (H) and multiplicity (K) gating. Approximately 160 million and 307 million γ-γ coincidence events were collected for the 129 MeV and 134 MeV beam energies, respectively. Previous information about the 193Pb level scheme is scarce, thus much new information about transitions in this nucleus was obtained. A new two-dimensional Egamma vs. Egamma analysis method will be discussed

AbstractAbstract
[en] Two superdeformed (SD) bands have been found and assigned to 195Tl on the basis of excitation function and cross bombardment results. The two bands are almost identical in transition energies to those observed in 193Tl. They are signature partners with a splitting, presumably due to the proton i13/2 (Ω=5/2) orbital, characteristic of all known SD bands in the thallium iosotpes. Their alignments relative to the 193Tl bands were found to be zero. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] A weakly populated rotational band with energy spacings characteristic of superdeformation has been found in the reaction 154Sm(48Ca,xn) at E(48Ca)=205 MeV. This band has seven transitions with an average γ-ray energy spacing of approximately 42 keV. It is assigned to 198Pb on the basis of the excitation-function results. We also confirm the isotopic assignment of a previously reported superdeformed (SD) band in 196Pb via the cross bombardments 176Yb(26Mg,xn) and 176Yb(24Mg,xn). Three SD bands have now been identified in the Pb isotopes with neutron numbers 112, 114, and 116

[en] The transition from strong static pairing to weak static pairing and its consequences to the excitation spectrum of a mesoscopic (medium number of particles) system are investigated. New levels have been measured in 168Yb. A reasonable description of the A∼168 isotopes spectra is obtained. The adequacy of the phase transition concept is discussed

[en] A rotational band, with energy spacings characteristic of superdeformed shapes, has been identified in 194Pb. The band, which consists of 12 members, was produced in the bombardment of 176Yb with 24Mg. This band extends the mass-194 region of superdeformation to higher Z. (orig.)
