AbstractAbstract
[en] We review our recent studies on the Kondo effect in the tunneling phenomena through quantum dot systems. Numerical methods to calculate reliable tunneling conductance are developed. In the first place, a case in which electrons of odd number occupy the dot is studied, and experimental results are analyzed based on the calculated result. Tunneling anomaly in the even-number-electron occupation case, which is recently observed in experiment and is ascribed to the Kondo effect in the spin singlet-triplet cross over transition region, is also examined theoretically

AbstractAbstract
[en] The invariant form of interaction between multi-poles, including the octupole, is studied for the simple cubic (SC), body centered and face centered cubic lattices. The coupling terms can be arranged in a way similar to that of the hopping matrix between the LCAO's. A table for SC by Shiina et al. (J. Phys. Soc. Japan 66 (1997) 1741) is generalized for the general wave number case of the three types of lattice. Recent experimental result of TmTe is thereby analyzed. The development of the ferromagnetic moment below the anti-ferromagnetic transition under the anti-ferro quadrupolar order phase is discussed in this connection

AbstractAbstract
[en] We construct a nuclear data server which provides data in the evaluated nuclear data library through the network by means of TCP/IP. The client is not necessarily a user but a computer program. Two examples with a prototype server program are demonstrated, the first is data transfer from the server to a user, and the second is to a computer program. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Evaluation of lymph nodes is one of the most important roles of imaging in the head and neck. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignancy in the head and neck and imaging has an important role in staging of the disease. Nodal assessment is also indicated for various neoplastic and nonneoplastic diseases. Although imaging findings are often nonspecific, imaging features such as size, intranodal necrosis, calcification, and strong enhancement may be able to narrow the differential diagnosis. CT and MR imaging characteristics of nodal diseases and differential diagnosis of nodal pathologies are discussed. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Band calculations for Ce compounds with the AuCu3-type crystal structure were carried out on the basis of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The auxiliary impurity problem was solved by a method named NCA f2vc (noncrossing approximation including the f2 state as a vertex correction). The calculations take into account the crystal-field splitting, the spin-orbit interaction, and the correct exchange process of the f1 → f0, f2 virtual excitation. These are necessary features in the quantitative band theory for Ce compounds and in the calculation of their excitation spectra. The results of applying the calculation to CePd3 and CeRh3 are presented as the first in a series of papers. The experimental results of the photoemission spectrum (PES), the inverse PES, the angle-resolved PES, and the magnetic excitation spectra were reasonably reproduced by the first-principles DMFT band calculation. At low temperatures, the Fermi surface (FS) structure of CePd3 is similar to that of the band obtained by the local density approximation. It gradually changes into a form that is similar to the FS of LaPd3 as the temperature increases, since the 4f band shifts to the high-energy side and the lifetime broadening becomes large. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] We investigate the non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior of the impurity Anderson model (IAM) with non-Kramers doublet ground state of the f2 configuration under the tetragonal crystalline electric field (CEF). The low energy spectrum is explained by a combination of the NFL and the local-Fermi-liquid parts which are independent with each other. The NFL part of the spectrum has the same form to that of two-channel-Kondo model (TCKM). We have a parameter range that the IAM shows the -lnT divergence of the magnetic susceptibility together with the positive magneto resistance. We point out a possibility that the anomalous properties of UxTh1-xRu2Si2 including the decreasing resistivity with decreasing temperature can be explained by the NFL scenario of the TCKM type. We also investigate an effect of the lowering of the crystal symmetry. It breaks the NFL behavior at around the temperature, δ/10, where δ is the orthorhombic CEF splitting. The NFL behavior is still expected above the temperature, δ/10. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] An analysis has been made of the survival and symptomatic response of 41 patients following radiation therapy for post-surgical recurrences of rectal carcinoma. The over-all median survival time was 8.0 months. From the investigation of prognostic factors by log-rank test, the recurrence sites were found to be a factor which influenced the survival rate with a fair statistical significance (p<0.005). When recurrence was seen at the primary site alone, median survival was 14.3 months compared with 4.0 months for patients combined with distant metastasis. Of 41 patients, 27 had a complete pain relief, 7 a partial pain relief and 7 no pain relief. Median pain relief free survival time was 11.8 months. The pain relief free survival rate seems to be increased in the group with a multiple daily fractionation and a short over-all time in radiotherapy, but was of no statistical significance. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The operation of a tandem mirror using Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies (ICRF) waves and limiter biasing is performed in the HIEI tandem mirror. An ion confining potential is formed in the plug cell by high-field-side injection of the fast magnetosonic wave. Limiter biasing is simultaneously imposed with formation of a confining potential and minority heating in the central cell, and both axial and radial confinement are enhanced by a factor of 4. As a result, a high-beta plasma (∼14%) is produced in the central cell. The high-beta plasma is sustained magnetohydrodynamically by ponderomotive force of ICRF electric fields. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] We review works on the non-Fermi-liquid properties. The theoretical studies in this project are concentrated on the anomalies of the two channel Kondo model type, and of the quantum critical point type. We give list of compounds showing non-Fermi liquid properties not restricting to those studied in this project. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Data writing on a dielectric layer surface by a microdischarge is investigated using a two-dimensional numerical analysis. A microdischarge, working as a regulated output/storage device, accumulates a regulated amount of charge on the surface of an adjacent dielectric layer. The charge density depends on the voltage applied on a writing electrode, located externally on the opposite side of the dielectric layer. Data writing as a charge accumulation is completed not during the discharge but in the phase of afterglow. As a result, a regulated electric field is imposed on the dielectric layer. The charge density dependence on its polarity is also investigated
