AbstractAbstract
[en] The parameter anti eta of muon decay has been measured in the radiative decay μ+ -> e+νsub(e) anti νsub(μ)γ of unpolarized positive muons. The result anti eta <= 0.083 (68% confidence) or anti eta = -0.03 +- 0.10 with p fixed at 3/4 yields an improvement of the previous value by more than a factor of two. An analysis of all data on muon decay that are presently available slightly improves the constraints on the weak coupling constants to: gsub(s) <= 0.29 gsub(v), gsub(P) <= 0.27 gsub(v), gsub(T) <= 0.23 gsub(V) and 0.92gsub(v) <= 1.27 gsub(v). AbstractAbstract
[en] A Compton suppression spectrometer used for in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy is described. The system consists of a large NaI(Tl)-crystal (cross section 25.4 cm, 25.4 cm long) and a large-volume closed-end Ge(Li) detector. The overall suppression factor is about 11, with an optimum of 14.5 at low energies. Examples are given of the use at proton- and π--beams. (Auth.)

Elimination of Harmful Organisms from Food and Feed by Irradiation. Report of a Panel1968
AbstractAbstract
[en] In the tropics, mixed-feed ingredients of vegetable origin are often contaminated with salmonellae. From 10-g samples of meal from imported cotton seed, soya and sunflower-seed flakes, produced by a large mixed-feed plant in the Netherlands, 11 of 125 samples tested in 1964 and 1965 gave a positive result for Salmonella with a conventional method. In 1967, a pre-enrichment of 200-g samples for 7 h at 43°C in flasks with 2 litres of a brilliant-green peptone bile medium resulted in an almost 50% increase of positive samples. A well-monitored pelletizing process of mixed feeds for cattle, pigs and poultry can eliminate the salmonellae in the feeds without causing an increase in feeding costs. The effect of pelletizing can be checked by determining the total number of Enterobacteriaceae per 10-g of pellet sample. A reduction of 4 to 6 decimals in the number of Enterobacteriaceae may be obtained by this process. The most reliable method to show that a lot of mixed feed is free from salmonellae is the ''pig- enrichment-test'' (PET). A negative PET can be obtained by feeding exclusively checked pellets. The testing of imported Argentine pellets of cotton-seed flakes sampled on board in Rotterdam resulted in the isolation of S. cubana. The bacterial count of Enterobacteriaceae was found to be 30 per 10 milligram. In another sample of imported pellets (sunflower-seed flakes) no salmonellae and no Enterobacteriaceae were isolated. These results demonstrate that not every pelletizing process is able to diminish the Salmonella contamination. In fact, a non-monitored process may cause contamination or increase the number of salmonellae in the original product. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] A fast and simple track search algorithm based on a linear predictive method and applicable to cylindrical magnetic spectrometers is described. Resulting track parameters, expressed in terms of linear predictors, can be used to do event analysis on-line. The application of the algorithm to the μ->3e experiment using the SINDRUM detector is detailed. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The conceptual design of a 6.5 m long superconducting solenoid with 0.4 m inner diameter has been made at PSI. The so called (π -μ)-Converter (PMC) will be coupled to the existing superconducting solenoid SINDRUM II to achieve high muon fluxes in the latter. Both solenoids must have the same nominal magnetic induction of 1.5 T. Stringent homogeneity conditions of the magnetic field must be achieved in the PMC to produce the required beam purity and intensity. A special coil design was chosen to allow operation of the PMC either connected to SINDRUM II or as a stand alone magnet. The magnetic and mechanical connection of the solenoids presented a special challenge. The winding will be indirectly cooled with supercritical helium in forced-flow mode. The paper describes the conceptual design and the results of two preliminary design studies. (Author)
