[en] Highlights: • Generalization of realizability-preserving Galerkin methods from kinetic theory. • Preservation of hyperbolicity through a slope limiter. • The slope limiter shifts the solution locally into its domain of hyperbolicity. • Application to the model of radiative transfer and compressible Euler equations. • Comparison with Monte Carlo and the intrusive polynomial moment method. Uncertainty Quantification through stochastic spectral methods is rising in popularity. We derive a modification of the classical stochastic Galerkin method, that ensures the hyperbolicity of the underlying hyperbolic system of partial differential equations. The modification is done using a suitable “slope” limiter, based on similar ideas in the context of kinetic moment models. We apply the resulting modified stochastic Galerkin method to the compressible Euler equations and the model of radiative transfer. Our numerical results show that it can compete with other UQ methods like the intrusive polynomial moment method while being computationally inexpensive and easy to implement.

AbstractAbstract
[en] There have been many studies on Depth Of Interaction (DOI) identification for high resolution Positron Emission Tomography (PET) systems, including those on phoswich detectors, double-sided readout, light sharing methods, and wavelength discrimination. The wavelength discrimination method utilizes the difference in wavelength of stacked scintillators and requires a color sensitive photodetector. Here, a new silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) coupled to a color filter (colorSiPM) was designed and fabricated for DOI detection. The fabricated colorSiPM has two anode readouts that are sensitive to blue and green color. The colorSiPM's response and DOI identification capability for stacked GAGG and LYSO crystals are characterized. The fabricated colorSiPM is sensitive enough to detect a peak of 662 keV from a source.

AbstractAbstract
[en] This work demonstrates the application of a multi-color LED and a consumer color camera for visualizing phase boundaries in two-phase flows, in particular for particle tracking velocimetry. The LED emits a sequence of short light pulses, red, green, then blue (RGB), and through its color-filter array, the camera captures all three pulses on a single RGB frame. In a backlit configuration, liquid droplets appear as shadows in each color channel. Color reversal and color cross-talk correction yield a series of three frozen-flow images that can be used for further analysis, e.g., determining the droplet velocity by particle tracking. Three example flows are presented, solid particles suspended in water, the penetrating front of a gasoline direct-injection spray, and the liquid break-up region of an “air-assisted” nozzle. Because of the shadowgraphic arrangement, long path lengths through scattering media lower image contrast, while visualization of phase boundaries with high resolution is a strength of this method. Apart from a pulse-and-delay generator, the overall system cost is very low.

AbstractAbstract
[en] For the COMPASS experiment at CERN a gas electron multiplier (GEM) detector with a novel readout type has been developed. With its combined pixel and strip structure it should provide precise spatial information for the tracking of charged particles and still stand the high intensities of muon and hadron beams with a particle rate of more than 2 .105/(mm2 s). The low material budget of these detectors was an essential part in reducing the amount of multiple scattering and secondary interactions in the hadron beam used in the year 2008. Five detectors have been successfully set up in the COMPASS spectrometer. We present results in hadron beams of low (3.5 .103 π-/(mm2 s)) and high (2 .104 π-/(mm2 s)) intensities

AbstractAbstract
[en] For the education of students a lab course on positron emission tomography (PET) is currently build. Students get a view into the physics of PET, detector concepts, electronics, signal processing, software, and reconstruction algorithms resulting in a reconstructed image of Na-22 sources with different shapes. The lab aims on students of physics and medicine. We use a former small animal detector prototype with LSO (lutetium-oxyorthosylicate) as scintillator and a single channel readout with 96 APDs (avalanche photodiodes). Data aquisition and signal processing is done by a sampling ADC system; data processing and image reconstruction via ROOT. We present the status of the project.

AbstractAbstract
[en] Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) are interesting light sensors for Positron Emission Tomography (PET). The detector signal of analog SiPMs is the total charge of all fired cells. Energy and time information have to be determined with dedicated readout electronics. Philips Digital Photon Counting has developed a SiPM with added electronics on cell level delivering a digital value of the time stamp and number of fired cells. These so called Digital Photon Counters (DPC) are fully digital devices. In this study, the feasibility of using DPCs in combination with LYSO (Lutetium Yttrium Oxyorthosilicate) and GAGG (Gadolinium Aluminum Gallium Garnet) scintillators for PET is tested. Each DPC module has 64 channels with 3.2 × 3.8775 mm"2, comprising 3200 cells each. GAGG is a recently developed scintillator (Z_e_f_f = 54, 6.63 g cm"−"3, 520 nm peak emission, 46 000 photons MeV"−"1, 88 ns (92%) and 230 ns (8%) decay times, non-hygroscopic, chemically and mechanically stable). Individual crystals of 2 × 2 × 6 mm"3 were coupled onto each DPC pixel. LYSO coupled to the DPC results in a coincidence time resolution (CTR) of 171 ps FWHM and an energy resolution of 12.6% FWHM at 511 keV. Using GAGG, coincidence timing is 310 ps FWHM and energy resolution is 8.5% FWHM. A PET detector prototype with 2 DPCs equipped with a GAGG array matching the pixel size (3.2 × 3.8775 × 8 mm"3) was assembled. To emulate a ring of 10 modules, objects are rotated in the field of view. CTR of the PET is 619 ps and energy resolution is 9.2% FWHM. The iterative MLEM reconstruction is based on system matrices calculated with an analytical detector response function model. A phantom with rods of different diameters filled with "1"8F was used for tomographic tests. (paper)

[en] In this study, we propose a staggered three-layer depth-of-interaction (DOI) detector with a 1 mm crystal pitch and 19.8 mm total crystal thickness for a high-resolution and high-sensitivity small animal in-beam PET scanner. A three-layered stacked LYSO scintillation array (0.9 × 0.9 × 6.6 mm3 crystals, 23 × 22 mm2 surface area) read out by a SiPM array (8 × 8 channels, 3 × 3 mm2 active area/channel and 50 μm microcell size) with data acquisition, signal processing and digitization performed using the PETsys Electronics Evaluations kit (based on the TOFPET v2c ASIC) builds a DOI LYSO detector block. The performance of the DOI detector was evaluated in terms of crystal resolvability, energy resolution, and coincidence resolving time (CRT). A comparative performance evaluation of the staggered three-layer LYSO block was conducted with two different SiPM arrays from KETEK and HAMAMATSU. 100% (KETEK) and 99.8% (HAMAMATSU) of the crystals were identified, by using a flood irradiation the front- and back-side. The average energy resolutions for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd layers were 16.5 (±2.3)%, 20.9(±4.0)%, and 32.7 (±21.0)% (KETEK) and 19.3 (±3.5)%, 21.2 (±4.1)%, and 26.6 (±10.3)% (HAMAMATSU) for the used SiPM arrays. The measured CRTs (FWHM) for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd layers were 532 (±111) ps, 463 (±108) ps, and 447 (±111) ps (KETEK) and 402 (±46) ps, 392 (±54) ps, and 408 (±196) ps (HAMAMATSU). In conclusion, the performance of the staggered three-layer DOI detector with 1 mm LYSO pitch and 19.8 mm total crystal thickness was fully characterized. The feasibility of a highly performing readout of a high resolution DOI PET detector via SiPM arrays from KETEK and HAMAMATSU employing the PETsys TOFPET v2c ASIC could be demonstrated. (paper)
