AbstractAbstract
[en] Accelerated heavy ions are an essential tool in the nuclear and atommic physics research. After a chapter on the acceleration of heavy ions the main topics are the atomic physics of heavy ions and heavy ion nuclear reactions and nuclear structure investigations, nuclear matter, new elements and isotopes, and finally a chapter on applications in microstructure investigations, biology and medicine, and heavy ion fusion processes

AbstractAbstract
[en] Taking stock after five years of UNILAC operation, one finds that most of the tasks with which GSI was charged at its foundation have been tackled with good results. New scientific perspectives have been opened up in the fields of nuclear physics, nuclear chemistry, and atomic physics. UNILAC is the world's only accelerator in which the ions of superheavy elements get enough energy to be able to react with all other atomic nuclei. (orig.)
[de]
(orig.)Original Title

AbstractAbstract
[en] We report results (on an intermediate statistics sample) of a study of weak semi-leptonic form factors of B and D decays, addressing the uncertainties from mass extrapolations to chiral and to heavy quarks. Moreover, we present a nonperturbative test to the LMK current renormalization scheme for vector current transition matrix elements and find remarkable agreement. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Man-made heavy-element production, previously accessible by successive neutron capture, has entered a new age by the invention of powerful heavy-ion accelerators. New insight in the fusion process and new experimental techniques have led to the discovery of two new elements with charge numbers 107 and 109 at GSI, the German Heavy Ion Research Laboratory. The production of very neutron-deficient Lu and Tm isotopes resulted in the discovery of a new mode of radioactive decay, proton radioactivity. Slow fusion of systems with nearly 500 nucleons as well as the dynamics of very fast fission processes have been studied. The future development investigating the properties of nuclear matter aims at high energy compression phenomena, onsets of which have been discovered recently by a joint group from GSI Darmstadt and the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. AbstractAbstract
[en] Fast heavy ions interact violently with clusters of atoms as well as with single atoms and nuclei. Twenty experimental set-ups are installed at GSI (Gesellschaft fuer Schwerionenforschung) in Darmstadt for research with the heavy ions provided by the UNILAC accelerator for atomic and nuclear physics as well as for applied solid state physics. More than 60 new isotopes have been discovered at GSI up to now. (orig.)

(orig.)Original Title
