AbstractAbstract
[en] High-resolution in vitro hydrogen spectroscopy of perchloric acid extracts of human prostate cell lines prepared from radical prostatectomy specimens was performed at 360 MHz. Epithelial cell strains representing normal peripheral zone, normal central zone, carcinoma of varying Gleason grades, and benign prostatic hypertrophy were evaluated. The spectral peak assignments for metabolities, including lactate, citrate, and various amino acids, were determined from the literature, reference standards, gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. Inferences as to the possibility of differentiating various types of prostatic tissues based on hydrogen spectral signatures are discussed

AbstractAbstract
[en] Supine posture is known to influence cardiac dysfunction. The authors evaluated the efficacy of bedside chest radiography in detecting cardiac dysfunction. Radiographic findings were correlated with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) as assessed by radionuclide ventriculography in 107 noncongested survivors of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The efficacy of radiography differed for the different heart dimensions. Below an LVEF of 50% (37 patients), radiography correlated for the cardiothoracic ratio (r = .39, P < .001), the heart-lung rectangle (r = .70, P < .001), and the heart area/body surface area ratio (r = .77, P < .001). Below and LVEF of 30% (32 patients), only the latter correlation was significant (P < .005, r = .81). The authors present data showing the diagnostic capability of baseline bedside chest radiography after AMI

AbstractAbstract
[en] The three-point Dixon technique is a new variant of the Dixon method that yields essentially error-free separation of water and fat images even in the presence of susceptibility differences or field inhomogeneities. This paper evaluates the ability of this technique to demonstrate prostate zonal anatomy and compares this technique with conventional spin-echo imaging in the imaging and staging of prostate carcinoma. The authors compared standard spin-echo images of the prostates of five normal subjects with water and fat images obtained by the three-point Dixon method. Patients undergoing radical prostatectomy were staged with both methods. These images and images of the prostatectomy specimens were compared with histopathologic maps. All patients were scanned with a 1.5-T General Electric Signa system

AbstractAbstract
[en] In 24 patients with cystic fibrosis (CF), mean age 11.6 years, the velocity, flow volume, and cross-sectional area of the portal vein were determined by duplex-US, and findings were compared with findings in 30 age-matched controls. Size and echogenicity of liver and spleen were assessed by real-time US. There was a significant difference between CF and normal mean values, including, in CF, a decrease in velocity (P <.003), an increase in cross-sectional area (P <.001), and an increase in flow volume (P <.05). Changes in portal venous hemodynamics correlated with increased liver echogenicity and spleen size, suggestive of chronic parenchymal liver disease. Duplex US is a valuable diagnostic tool in the assessment of hepatic involvement in CF

AbstractAbstract
[en] We have studied GaAs - Fe granular magnetic-semiconductor hybrid structures by magneto-optic spectroscopy in a photon-energy range from 0.7 to 5 eV at temperatures from 7 to 300 K in magnetic fields up to 1.8 T. The structures have been grown by alternative molecular-beam deposition of GaAs and Fe. At the chosen substrate temperature of Ts=580 degreeC the Fe precipitates into clusters of nanometer to submicron size which are in part ferromagnetically ordered at 300 K. The polar Kerr spectra at 300 and 7 K show for the hybrid structures with high Fe content a broad negative peak with a Kerr rotation of -0.2 degree at a photon energy of 0.9 eV. The spectral dependence is very similar to pure Fe. Looking at the polar Kerr hysteresis loops at 300 K, a striking behavior is found. The hysteresis loops are reversed, i.e., the magneto-optic hysteresis curves decrease faster when decreasing the fields than the situation is when closing the hysteresis loop on the way back. This peculiar behavior is discussed in the context of local exchange-bias like coupling between ferromagnetic Fe clusters and an antiferromagnetic FeAs surrounding. An alternative model of two superimposed Kerr hysteresis loops is proposed as well. [copyright] 2001 American Institute of Physics
