AbstractAbstract
[en] Energy spectra of conversion electrons have been simulated by direct Monte Carlo calculations in the region of 500-1000 eV. Both elastic and inelastic scattering in the volume of platinum backing of the radioactive source have been taken into account as well as the electron scattering in the surface carbonaceous layer. The typical loss maxima observed in the experimental conversion line shapes are reasonably reproduced, if a proper thickness of the surface layer is considered. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Energy and angular distributions of electrons with initial energy from keV to hundreds of keV have been simulated by Monte Carlo method under initial conditions corresponding to the measurements in beta spectrometers. A pronounced effect of the electron scattering and backscattering in the source and its backing on angular distributions is demonstrated. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The relative efficiency of a channel electron multiplier for 2-9 keV electrons was determined using the β-spectra of vacuum evaporated 241Pu and 63Ni sources. The results agreed within ±0.8% (1 σ). Conversion electron measurements of 57Co and 169Yb supported the result. The electron scattering and energy losses within the sources were taken into account by means of Monte Carlo simulations of individual elastic and inelastic collisions. The detector was calibrated in the same geometry as it works inside the cylindrical mirror analyzer

AbstractAbstract
[en] Levels with spin values up to 35/2 in the ground-state band of 159Ho are populated when a 159Tb target is bombarded with 49 MeV α-particles. The observed pattern of rotational energies is discussed within a model where a quasiparticle is coupled to a rotor with a variable moment of inertia. The analysis suggests that the core exhibits back-bending similar to the behaviour in 160Er and 158Dy. However, the angular velocity giving back-bending is larger than in adjacent even nucleides unless the introduced ad hoc attenuation of the Coriolis force disappears at high spin, or more likely, unless the matrix elements of j2 are also reduced. This uncertainty associated with the motion of the odd particle precludes the analysis of small effects of the back-bending mechanism due to the blocking of an hsub(11/2) orbital. The relative γ-ray intensities support the notion that gsub(R) decreases with increasing values of spin. Furthermore, in the region of back-bending an additional drop of the E2/M1 branching ratio suggests that the B(E2) values are here reduced by about 50%. (Auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Direct Monte Carlo modelling of individual elastic and inelastic scattering events of electrons in solids is described. The examples cover transmission through thin solid layers as well as backscattering from flat surfaces of bulk solids. Divergent beams and isotropic emission of incident electrons with energies from 5 to 200 keV are treated. (author) 16 refs., 4 figs

AbstractAbstract
[en] Backscattering in various backings of the 63Ni β-sources was simulated by means of the Monte Carlo method under conditions similar to recent experiments. The relative intensity and energy distribution of backscattered electrons were found to depend strongly on the β-particle energy. These findings should be taken into account in an accurate analysis of low-energy β-spectra, in particular when searching for the 17 keV neutrino. (Author)
