AbstractAbstract
[en] The workshop was held in Saclay, France from October 7 to 9, 1985 with the participation of 70 specialists from 10 European countries, Canada and the USA who heard 26 contributions presented in 6 sessions: an introductory session and sessions on sources and exposure, on personnel dosimetry, depth dose distribution, instruments for measurement in radiation fields, and on standardization. The content of all 26 papers is briefly characterized; the content of invited papers is described in more detail, their titles and names of authors are given. The conclusions arrived at by the workshop after broad discussions are also given. (A.K.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The principles of ionizing radiation protection are given as: all exposures must be justified by benefit; protective measures must be optimized with regard to protection and economy; under normal conditions the respective limits must not be exceeded. The dose equivalent is defined as is the quality factor. The evaluation of potential hazard and the assessment of actual irradiation is made by personnel dosimetry and radiation field monitoring. The general properties of detectors and dosimetry methods are briefly discussed. (M.D.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The electron states of atoms and molecules are explained with regard to material media close to human tissue. The transfer of ionizing radiation energy to electrons bound in molecules takes place by inelastic collisions of charged particles. The definition of excitation potential is given. The process of absorption of ionizing radiation energy in material media is divided into successive phases: the physical, physico-chemical, chemical and biological phase. The absorption is affected by the charged particle track. The character of the track is discussed separately for low, intermediate and high stopping power of the medium. (M.D.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The stochastic and non-stochastic variables of dosimetry are characterized, among them linear energy transfer, linear energy, and specific energy. Most frequently used for the experimental determination of these variables is the spherical proportional counter with central electrode, made of tissue equivalent material and filled with tissue equivalent gas. The smallest tissue volume which can be stimulated is about 50 nm. In order to determine linear energy transfer, Geiger-Mueller counters with reduced detection efficiency, organic scintillators, nuclear emulsions, cloud chambers and solid state track detectors are used. AbstractAbstract
[en] The use is described of thermal neutrons, fast neutrons, heavy charged particles and pions minus in medicine. The most frequent sources of these types of radiation and the depth dose distributions in tissue are given. The different types of radiation are compared with regard to biological effect. The absorbed dose and its depth distribution is determined by direct measurement or by calculation from the determined fluence and energy spectrum of particles. Methods are described for the determination of fluence and of spectra of different types of radiation and for the determination of absorbed dose. The table shows the composition of muscle tissue and bone tissue and of some tissue equivalent materials. (E.S.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The conference was held in Acapulco in Mexico from September 4-10, 1983. The proceedings contain 199 abstracts of communications, presented at the conference were 130 communications including posters. The papers covered the following problem areas: 1. Basic mechanisms; 2. Methodology; 3. Technology; 4. Applications. With the exception of several papers on basic mechanisms and on pure methodology most communications presented in sections 2 and 3 were devoted to concrete applications. Various systems of automatic analysis of solid state track detectors were discussed in a separate session. (Ha)
