AbstractAbstract
[en] The reasons for constructing large arrays of Compton-suppressed germanium detectors are discussed and a description is given of the Berkeley array, presently under construction. Preliminary results from the Berkeley system are given for the nucleus sup(156)Er. A transition is seen, around spin 30, from collective rotational behaviour to non-collective single-particle behaviour. The transition depends on configuration, as well as spin. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The use of Iatroscan thin-layer chromatography (TLC)/flame ionization detector (FID) system to perform quantitative gas compositional analysis of oil samples was demonstrated. Results of the field experiment at Parker's Cove, an estuarine wetland east of Houston, Texas, showed significant biodegradation, as evidenced by initially rapid decrease in the compositional saturate and aromatic fractions coinciding with an increasing resin fraction. Details of the results were described, confirming that the Iatroscan TLC/FID system can be an effective tool for monitoring and measuring environmental processes. 10 refs., 5 figs

AbstractAbstract
[en] This work has confirmed and extended the level scheme of 164W using the 109 Ag(58Ni,p2n) reaction and identified for the first time levels in 158Hf (N=86) and 162W (N=88) using, respectively, 107 Ag(58Ni,p2n)162W and 107 Ag(54Fe,p2n)158Hf reactions. As a by-product, level schemes were also obtained for 163W and 159Hf, the latter being observed in two of the bombardments. The bulk of the measurements were carried out using 253 MeV,58Ni and 233 MeV, 54Fe beams from the 88-inch cyclotron (in combination with the ECR source) at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. Gamma-rays were observed in the 21-detector array, HERA. Additional measurements were carried out, and are still in progress at the ANU, 14 UD Pelletron facility. The alignment gain in the yrast band of 162W is proposed to be due to the h29/2 neutrons consistent in frequency and alignment with the CSM calculations. No regularity is discernible in the side-band sequences, assumed to be of negative parity, in either 162W or 158Hf, but further analysis is necessary to confirm the spin assignments. 12 refs., 7 figs

AbstractAbstract
[en] We present a semi-classical analysis of the B(M1) and B(E2) transition probabilities in the shears bands in 193-199Pb as a function of the shears angle. This provides a semi-empirical confirmation of the shears mechanism proposed by S. Frauendorf using the Tilted-Axis-Cranking model. We interpret this as a consequence of a residual interaction between the proton and neutron blades, and it is shown that the main ingredient of this effective force can be described by a P2(θ) term with a strength of 400-600 keV. Such an interaction can be mediated through the core by particle-vibration coupling. The competition between the shears and the rotation of the core is investigated within the framework of a classical solution of two particles-plus-rotor model

AbstractAbstract
[en] We have studied the unresolved γ-ray spectrum of three ytterbium nuclei produced in heavy-ion fusion reactions and measured the two damping widths, Γμ, the spreading (compound-damping) width, and Γrot, the rotational damping width, together with Pnar, the probability that the population enters and leaves a given state via the same component of the wave function. Our results for Γμ and Γrot are in good agreement with theoretical expectations, as well as with those of other groups using different methods. Our results for Pnar lead to a new method for quantitative evaluation of the full order-to-chaos transition in these Yb nuclei. Finally, we provide the first evidence for the motional narrowing of Γrot in nuclei. The basic physics occurring in this region is level mixing, which our simulation technique reproduces surprisingly well
