AbstractAbstract
[en] An exclusive measurement of the Coulomb breakup of 8B into 7Be+p at 254 AMeV was used to infer the low-energy 7Be(p,γ)8B cross section. Particular emphasis was placed on the angular correlations of the breakup particles which demonstrate clearly that E1 multipolarity dominates within the angular cuts selected for the analysis. The deduced astrophysical S17 factors exhibit good agreement with the most recent direct 7Be(p,γ)8B measurements. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] GSI proposes to build a next-generation facility for research with relativistic beams of ions and antiprotons. This facility allows a broad range of topics in nuclear and astrophysics, plasma and atomic physics to be addressed. The topic most interesting in the context of this conference is physics with high-intensity beams of exotic nuclei. In addition, a short overview of the opportunities in the other fields of nuclear physics is given

AbstractAbstract
[en] The empirical parametrization of fragmentation cross sections, EPAX, has been successfully applied to estimate fragment production cross sections in reactions of heavy ions at high incident energies. It is checked whether a similar parametrization can be found for proton-induced spallation around 1 GeV, the range of interest for ISOL-type RIB facilities. The validity of EPAX for medium-energy heavy-ion induced reactions is also checked. Only a few datasets are available, but in general EPAX predicts the cross sections rather well, except for fragments close to the projectile, where the experimental cross sections are found to be larger

AbstractAbstract
[en] We have modified the empirical parametrization of fragmentation cross sections, EPAX, to remove discrepancies with cross sections measured at the SIS/FRS facility at GSI. The most significant changes refer to the description of fragmentation yields close to the projectile and of the memory effect of neutron-deficient projectiles

AbstractAbstract
[en] Double-phonon giant dipole resonances in 136 Xe, 197 Au, 208 Pb, and 238 U have been studied at beam energies of about 1 A GeV at GSI, both by inclusive and exclusive experiments. Simple Weizsaecker-Williams calculations turned out to be surprisingly successful in reproducing the measured neutron-removal and fission cross sections, but indicate too small cross sections compared to a simple harmonic oscillator model. The same methods were applied to interpret similar dat measured recently at CERN at a much higher energy of 150 A GeV for 208 Pb projectiles. While the neutron-removal cross sections could be well reproduced, the very large total-interaction cross sections at these energies cannot be accounted for by the summed hadronic and electromagnetic cross sections. More recently, we have turned to the study of giant resonances in unstable nuclei in complete-kinematics experiments at LAND. As a first step in this direction, we have investigated the systematics of the GDR in the 17-22O sequence of isotopes. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] High-energy Coulomb dissociation (CD) can be used to investigate the time-reversed process, radiative capture, for unstable nuclei where the direct capture reaction is difficult or impossible to perform. At GSI, we have run a series of CD measurements involving the proton-halo nucleus 8B which plays a major role in solar-neutrino physics. We could show that for this case CD and direct proton capture yield the same result. Theoretical guidance is necessary, however, to make sure that contributions of different electro-magnetic multipolarities and nuclear dissociation processes are well under control. Recently, we have complemented the LAND/ALADIN experimental apparatus at GSI with new Si microstrip detectors and proton-drift-chambers to continue similar studies with radioactive beams from the fragment separator FRS at GSI. The first case of astrophysical interest to be studied will be the CD of 27P. Another case will be the 2-proton breakup of 17Ne to investigate radiative two-proton capture on 15O, a process which could modify the reaction flow of the rp-process

AbstractAbstract
[en] The 7Be(p, γ)8B reaction has been studied at GSI via the Coulomb Dissociation of 8B at 254 A MeV, using the large acceptance spectrometer KAOS to detect the outgoing fragments. We have studied experimentally the E2 contribution to the Coulomb Dissociation by measuring the angular correlations of the breakup fragments. The resulting astrophysical S17 factor is compared to the results of other direct and indirect measurements

AbstractAbstract
[en] Target residues from the reaction of 2.6 GeV protons with gold and thorium nuclei have been studied with radiochemical techniques. Chemical separations were used to enhance the sensitivity for detecting target residues in the near target region. These data are compared to a new empirical parameterization of the mass and charge yields of fragmentation, or spallation, products based on a comprehensive analysis of data in the literature. Data include results from both projectile and target fragmentation studies. The new near-target residues provide significant new insight into the variation of the cross sections of products near in mass to the target (or projectile). The results of this study and the empirical description are compared to the internuclear-cascade model of these reactions. (orig.)
