Low temperature detectors for neutrinos and dark matter IV1992
Low temperature detectors for neutrinos and dark matter IV1992
AbstractAbstract
[en] A new cryogenic detector is presented which consists of a bolometer crystal covered with a superconducting film exposed to a microwave flux. An incident particle will create nonthermal phonons which then produce excess quasiparticles in the film. These quasiparticles lead to microwave absorption and a subsequent heating of the bolometer. In this way the energy deposited by a particle in the crystal could be amplified linearly. Gains up to 104 may be obtained, making it possible to build a large volume detector with an excellent energy resolution. (author) 5 refs.; 1 fig

AbstractAbstract
[en] We report on the performance of a 1 m3 Time Projection Chambers filled with CF4 at 3 bar, immersed in liquid scintillator and viewed by photomultipliers. Particle detection, event identification and localization achieved by measuring both the electric current and the scintillation light are presented. Particular features of α particle detection are also discussed. Finally, the 54Mn photopeak, reconstructed from the Compton scattering and recoil angle is shown

AbstractAbstract
[en] The MUNU experiment was carried out at the Bugey nuclear power reactor. The aim was the study of ν-baree- elastic scattering at low energy. The recoil electrons were recorded in a gas time projection chamber, immersed in a tank filled with liquid scintillator serving as veto detector, suppressing in particular Compton electrons. The measured electron recoil spectrum is presented. Upper limits on the neutrino magnetic moment were derived and are discussed

AbstractAbstract
[en] The microwave enhanced bolometer is a proposed cryogenic detector with an amplification mechanism. It consists of a crystal covered with a superconducting film exposed to a microwave flux. Incident particles will create nonthermal phonons in the crystal which then produce excess quasiparticles in the film. Those quasiparticles lead to microwave absorption in the film and a subsequent heating of the entire bolometer. In this way the energy deposited by a particle in the crystal could be amplified linearly by gains of up to 104. This would make possible bolometers of several kilograms with an excellent energy resolution which could be used for dark matter search or double beta decay experiments. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] We set up a prototype for a new cryogenic particle detector. Due to its predicted amplification mechanism, such a bolometer may allow the construction of large volume detectors with the high-energy resolution of small cryogenic devices. These could be used in double beta decay or dark matter search experiments. The development of the different parts of this detector will be described, specially the production of the necessary high-quality superconducting microwave cavities. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] We intend to build a low background detector based on a gas TPC to be installed near a nuclear reactor in Bugey for the experimental study of antiνee- scattering. The threshold on the electron recoil energy can be set very low, around 500 keV, giving the experiment a good sensitivity to the magnetic moment of the antiνe, extending down to 2-3.10-11 Bohr magnetons.
