AbstractAbstract
[en] We describe the structure and performance of a system of 34 drift chambers, which has been in operation at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) since August 1977 in the experiment R209, p + p → μ+ + μ- + X. The field shaping of the drift cell has been obtained by means of printed-board cathodes; the read-out is two-dimensional by means of 83 cm long flat solenoidal delay lines, wound around 200 μm thick vetronite strips. We report some results on the main operating features, like efficiency, rate capability, space resolution (wires = 250 μm; delay lines = 1.8 up to 4 mm) at a test beam and under ISR running conditions. AbstractAbstract
[en] The Fire-String model, which reproduces, without perturbative QCD gluons, all the experimental data about the structure of hadronic-final states in e+e- annihilation and in hadron-hadron inclusive scattering, is successfully applied to the production of high transverse momentum lepton pairs in proton-proton collisions at ISR energies. AbstractAbstract
[en] In the 1981 Collider run, proton-antiproton elastic scattering was measured in the range 0.05 < -t < 0.19 GeV2. The t-distribution could be fitted by the exponential exp (bt) with slope parameter b = 17.2 +- 1.0 GeV-2. Combining this data with the measurement of the inelastic interaction rate the total cross-section was found to be sigmasub(t) = 66 +- 7 mb. The ration sigmasub(el)/sigmasub(t) is 0.20 +- 0.02. In the 1982 run elastic scattering was measured in the range 0.21 < -t <0.5 GeV2. The t-distribution is well described by the slope parameter b = 13.6 +- 0.5 GeV-2. A marked variation of the slope parameter with t takes place around -t = 0.15 GeV2, an effect similar to that previously observed at the ISR. Measurement of inelastic scattering are also discussed. AbstractAbstract
[en] We report the results of a study of the mechanism of inclusive dimuon production from the reaction p+p→μ+μ-+X at the CERN intersecting storage rings. The present experiment was done at the center-of-mass energies √s = 62 and 44 GeV and in the dimuon pair invariant-mass region m = 3-25 GeV. The dependence on the Feynman variable x has been measured. The average transverse momentum is found to increase with √s and with mass and reaches < p/sub T/>approx. =1.9 GeV, compatible with predictions from quantum-chromodynamic gluon processes

AbstractAbstract
[en] Proton-antiproton elastic scattering was measured at the CM energy √s=546 GeV in the four-momentum transfer range 0.03<-t<0.32 GeV2. For -t<0.15 GeV2 the data are well described by a simple exponential form exp(bt) with slope parameter b=15.2+-0.2 GeV-2. This value is significantly larger than the one measured in the region 0.21<-t<0.50 GeV2. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The proton-antiproton total cross section was measured at the CM energy √s=546 GeV. The result is sigmasub(tot)=61.9+-1.5 mb. The ratio of the elastic to the total cross section is sigmasub(el)/sigmasub(tot)=0.215+-0.005. A comparison to the lower energy data shows that the increase of the total cross section with energy is very close to a log2s behaviour. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Prompt dimuon production has been measured. Events with mass up to 25 GeV/c2 are observed, as well as the J and UPSILON resonances. Cross sections are given for J and UPSILON production. For the continuum, the scaling function F(tau) is measured at very small values of √tau=m/√s covering the range 0.05<√tau<0.20

AbstractAbstract
[en] Single diffraction dissociation was measured in the reaction anti pp→anti pX at the centre-of-mass energy √s=546 GeV. The mass M of the system X was deduced from the pseudorapidity distribution of the observed charged tracks. The cross section of single diffraction dissociation for M2/s≤0.05 i s σsd=9.4±0.7 mb. Comparison to the ISR data shows that σsd increases with energy less fast than the total and the elastic cross sections. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The reaction anti pp->anti pX was studied at a centre-of-mass energy √s=540 GeV by measuring the momentum spectrum of the antiproton. Data are presented in the four-momentum transfer range 0.5<-t<1.2 GeV2. The shape of the mass distribution of the system X shows a diffractive component as already observed at lower energies. The differential cross section scales approximately with energy when compared to the ISR data. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Proton-antiproton elastic scattering was measured at the CERN SPS Collider at the centre-of-mass energy √s = 546 GeV in the Coulomb interference region. The data provide information on the phase of the hadronic amplitude in the forward direction. The conventional analysis gives for the ratio ρ of the real to the imaginary part of the hadronic amplitude the result ρ = 0.24±0.04. (orig.)
