AbstractAbstract
[en] The article assessed (i) the contributions of petroleum refineries and fossil-fuelled power plant on local air quality and acid deposition; (ii) the contribution of nitrogen oxides to acid deposition and (iii) the application of dynamic critical load modelling in assessment of the impact of acid deposition. The study includes a case study of the local impact of emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from the Lindsey and Conoco refineries on the Humber and critical loading modelling for emissions from Uskmouth power station

AbstractAbstract
[en] The results of IBA 2 predictions for two-proton pick-up in the mass A=100 region have been compared with experimental data which were previously obtained using the (14C, 16O) reaction on various target nuclei in this mass region. It is found that the IBA 2 model can reproduce the relative ground-state transition strengths in the even Pd, Ru and Mo isotopes; however, it cannot account for the observed relative strengths of the first excited O+ state in the Mo isotopes. For these states a comparison has been made between the pick-up data obtained in the present work, alpha pick-up data, and two-neutron transfer data. The results of such a comparison indicate that the O2+ states in the Mo isotopes change from having a predominantly proton structure for N < 56 to having a predominantly neutron structure for N > 58. AbstractAbstract
[en] Lifetimes have been measured for three M1 bands in light Sn/Cd nuclei using the DSAM technique. B(M1) values deduced from these measurements show a rapid decrease with increasing spin for a given configuration. The results have been compared with both tilted axis cranking and semi-empirical model calculations. These suggest that the shear mechanism is present in this mass region, and that the band in 106Sn appears to be the first example of almost pure magnetic rotation. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] States in 61Ni were populated using the 58Fe(α,nγ)61Ni reaction. Gamma-gamma coincidence measurements at beam energies of 8.0, 8.5 and 12.0 MeV were used to determine the decay scheme. Excitation energies, gamma-ray branching ratios, angular distributions, linear polarizations and mixing ratios for levels below 2.2 MeV in excitation were measured at α particle energies of 7.8, 11.0 and 13.0 MeV. The analysis of the angular distributions and linear polarizations allowed spin and parity assignments of Jsup(π) = 7-/2, 7-/2, 5-/2, 9-/2, 9-/2, 5-/2, 7-/2, 9+/2 and 11-/2 to be made for the levels at 1015, 1454, 1609, 1807, 1987, 1997, 2018, 2121 and 2129 keV respectively. Electromagnetic multipole mixing ratios were determined for many of the gamma-ray transitions. Centroid shifts were also extracted from angular distributions taken at bombarding energies of 7.5, 7.8, 11.0 and 13.0 MeV. The mean lifetimes of the 908, 1132, 1186, 1454, 1609, 1729, 1807, 1987, 1997, 2018 and 2124 keV levels were deduced using the Doppler-shift attenuation method to be 1500 +- 400, 450 +- 30, 140 +- 20, 1200 +- 290, 370 +-30, 99 +- 8, 1600 +- 250, 960 +- 240, 72 +- 6, 580 +- 60 and 84 +- 6 fs respectively. The results are compared with recent shell-model calculations. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The (14C, 16O) reaction on even Ru and Pd isotopes has been investigated at 60 MeV bombarding energy. Relative spectroscopic strengths for transitions to the ground states are found to decrease suddenly at N=60. Evidence is presented which suggests that a significant contribution to the reaction mechanism for transfers to the ground states could be due to the sequential transfer of the protons. Large two-proton hole components are found in the first excited O+ states of the light Mo isotopes. (author)
