AbstractAbstract
[en] Two spectral collocation schemes on the unit disc are presented. The first one is based on the mapping of Gordon and Hall. Here the unit square is directly mapped onto the unit disc by means of an interpolation technique. Unlike other Poisson solvers on the unit disc no polar coordinates are involved. Hence the usual problems with the singularity of polar coordinates are avoided. This is also shown for more complex geometries. The second method is based on a diameter approach where the collocation nodes are no more clustering in the center. Numerical results are presented which demonstrate the high accuracy of our new spectral collocation schemes

AbstractAbstract
[en] We derive exact relations that connect the universal C/k4-decay of the momentum distribution at large k with both thermodynamic properties and correlation functions of two-component Fermi gases in one dimension with contact interactions. The relations are analogous to those obtained by Tan in the three-dimensional case and are derived from an operator product expansion of the one- and two-particle density matrix. They extend earlier results by Olshanii and Dunjko (2003) for the bosonic Lieb-Liniger gas. As an application, we calculate the pair distribution function at short distances and the dimensionless contact in the limit of infinite repulsion. The ground state energy approaches a universal constant in this limit, a behavior that also holds in the three-dimensional case. In both one and three dimensions, a Stoner instability to a saturated ferromagnet for repulsive fermions with zero range interactions is ruled out at any finite coupling. - Highlights: → We derive universal relations for the two-component, contact-interacting 1D Fermi gas. → These relations connect the tail of the momentum distribution to thermodynamic properties. → There is no saturated ferromagnetism at finite, repulsive couplings for the 3D model.

AbstractAbstract
[en] For detecting the positronium (Ps) formed in a positron-atom collision and emitted into a small solid angle, we utilize the impact-induced break-up into a positron-electron pair of which the electron subsequently starts an avalanche of secondary electrons. After exploratory measurements with a channel-electron multiplier (CEM) pivoted around the collision region, we employed a position-sensitive detector consisting of a stack of multi-channel plates (MCPs) and a two-dimensional delay-line anode. This experimental arrangement was used to study differential Ps formation in collision of 75 eV positrons with argon atoms. The two Ps-yielding reaction channels - Ar(e+, Ps)Ar+ (transfer) and Ar(e+, e-Ps)Ar++ (transfer ionization) - were distinguished by the flight time of the argon ion

AbstractAbstract
[en] The solubility of He, Ne, Ar, Kr, N2, O2, CO, CO2, CH4, CF4, and SF6 in cis-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane, trans-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane, and two binary mixtures of cis- + trans-1,3-dimethylcyclohexane and cis- + trans-1,4-dimethylcyclohexane, respectively, have been determined at 1 atm pressure in the range 297 to 313 K. From the experimental results, the enthalpy and entropy changes on solution for 1 atm partial pressure of gas and 298.15 K have been calculated. These values have been compared with results obtained through application of scaled-particle theory. Agreement is generally quite satisfactory. On this basis, a recent semi-empirical correlation advanced by Field, Wilhelm, and Battino is tested. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The solubilities of 11 gases in n-octane, n-decane, 1-octanol, and 1-decanol have been determined at atmospheric pressure in the range 293 to 313 K. From the temperature variation of the experimental solubilities, partial molar enthalpies and entropies of solution for 1 atm partial pressure of gas and 298.15 K have been derived. Comparison with results obtained through application of scaled-particle theory showed satisfactory agreement. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] 23 children underwent ileal loop urinary diversion between 1964 and 1974. They were 1977 reexamined after a average follow-up of 7 1/2 years. 7 of 22 children were found to have developed a stricture of the ileal loop. The diagnosis of conduit stricture rests primarily upon a tailored infusion urography and may be supplemented in exceptional cases by a low pressure loopogram. The radiographic and endoscopic features of the conduit stricture are presented. This entity usually develops late and silently. A review of the literature shows that the constant urinary exposure of the small bowel results in inflammatory and degenerative changes. The etiology of the conduit stricture has been attributed to these changes. This hypothesis is upon to criticism as the entire bowel segment undergoes inflammatory degeneration. In our cases, the stricture always developed at the level of either the left or the right ureteroileal anastomosis. For this reason, a localizing factor has to be taken into account: This could be the usually performed retroperitonealisation of the ureteroileal anastomosis and/or the permanent though minimal traction of a too short ureter which has been divided too high in the pelvis. Development of Electron Beam and X Ray Applications for Food Irradiation. Final Report of a Coordinated Research Project2022
AbstractAbstract
[en] The aim of the study is to investigate the amount of potentially induced radioactivity in food after irradiation by high energy X rays produced by an electron accelerator. The ultimate objective is to quantify with a high precision the induced radioactivity as a function of accelerator and food characteristics. The approach consists of combining experimental measurements and Monte Carlo simulations of radiation-matter interactions, so as to define a protocol that will enable levels of induced radioactivity to be assessed. Such assessments may be important for controlling the irradiation processes. (author)
