AbstractAbstract
[en] A device for separating gases of different mass is discussed. Such a device could be used in a laser-driven spin exchange source of polarized hydrogen atoms to reduce the contamination of alkali atoms. A Monte Carlo simulation has shown that the suggested apparatus based on a commercial turbo pump could reduce by a factor of 10-15 the concentration of the alkali-metal atoms in the hydrogen flow from a laser driven polarized source. This would greatly enhance the effective polarization in hydrogen targets

AbstractAbstract
[en] A tagging spectrometer for the gamma rays produced by Compton backscattering and bremsstrahlung processes is described. A storage ring bending magnet is used as an electron momentum separator for this spectrometer in the gamma ray energy range from 30 MeV up to 270 MeV. Factors determining the tagging efficiency and the energy resolution are discussed. The energy resolution is measured by the Compton backscattering process. The tagging spectrometer yields a resolution of 4 MeV and a tagging efficiency of 95%. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] We report on the design commissioning of two silica aerogel Cherenkov detectors with different refractive indices. In particular, very high performance in terms of the number of detected photoelectrons was achieved through an appropriate choice of Pmt type and reflector, along with some design considerations. After four years of operation, the number of detected photoelectrons was found to be noticeably reduced in both detectors as a result of contamination, yellowing, of the aerogel material. Along with the details of the set-up, we illustrate the characteristics of the detectors during different time periods and the probable causes of contamination. In particular, we show that the replacement of the contaminated aerogel and parts of the reflecting material has almost restored the initial performance of the detectors.

AbstractAbstract
[en] Experiments on electron scattering from polarized deuterons were carried out on the VEPP-3 storage ring at the Novosibirsk Institute for Nuclear Physics. The e-D coincidences were detected for elastic scattering experiments, and the p-n coincidences for photo disintegration studies. The tensor analyzing power of the elastic scattering was measured in the range of momentum transfer up to 3 f-1, and of photo disintegration in the range of photon energy up to 500 MeV. The detector system created for these experiments and the data analysis procedures are described in this paper. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The first experiment using a storage cell to increase the thickness of an internal polarized gas target in an electron beam storage ring was performed at the VEPP-3 facility. We describe the storage cell technique as applied in this measurement of elastic and inelastic electron scattering from tensor polarized deuterium. An analysis of electron-beam-induced depolarization of the target was performed and experimental tests were carried out which verify the effect. Other effects causing depolarization of the target are discussed as well as the means by which they are overcome. The effective pzz of the target, shown to be stable over 8 months, was 0.57±0.05; the total target thickness was increased over that of a jet target by a factor of fifteen. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Several variants of sources for nuclear polarized negative ion production have been proposed and tested. The simple adaptation of a high intensity polarized proton source for nuclear polarized H- production has been examined. A pulsed current of H- up to 0.15 mA has been obtained. For the examination of H- production in the collision of H atoms with exited alkali atoms, the conversion of a low energy atomic beam from an RF dissociator into negative ion flow by using cesium vapor target with discharge has been tested. The formation of H- ions by simultaneous operation of the RF dissociator and a discharge in the cesium target has been observed. Finally, the polarization of nuclei in molecules by collisions with electron polarized (optically pumped) alkali atoms, nuclear polarization in molecules, induced by chemical reaction in cyclic molecules, and the possibility of using this for ion sources are discussed

AbstractAbstract
[en] An internal-target technique was used to make the first measurements of the tensor analyzing power T20 of electron-deuteron elastic scattering in the four-momentum-transfer range of 2--3 fm-1. Polarized deuterium atoms were confined within a storage cell in the VEPP-3 electron storage ring in Novosibirsk to achieve a total target thickness of 3x1012 cm-2, 15 times greater than was previously possible with an atomic-beam target alone. The results for T20 are in agreement with reasonable models of the deuteron wave function
