AbstractAbstract
[en] Based on the results of interviews with experts in the field of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) the economic feasibility of driving on CNG in the northern provinces of the Netherlands has been determined by means of computer calculations. The calculations resulted in a so-called nett constant value of a fuel switch to natural gas. Also a sensitivity analysis and a scenario analysis were carried out to determine the dependency of the nett constant value for a number of important parameters. Based on the results of the analyses an acceptable price for CNG has been calculated for a full market and the related tax level

AbstractAbstract
[en] The economic feasibility of driving on compressed natural gas (CNG) was studied for the northern part of the Netherlands (provinces Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen). Data from interviews with three car fleet owners, which apply CNG, are used for a calculation model. Also interviews were held with seven organizations which might want to apply CNG for their vehicles. For each of the seven organizations the nett present value (NPV) of switching to CNG was calculated by means of the model. Also, a sensitivity analysis and a scenario analysis were carried out to determine the dependency of the NCW for several variables. Based on the results of those analyses an acceptable price for CNG was calculated and discussed

AbstractAbstract
[en] Three contributions to the debate on the future of Russian internal gas demand and exports are presented. In the first, it is argued that Russia's domestic demand will continue to fall due to a combination of payment enforcement for large industrial enterprises and their closure arising from restructuring. Information on gas demand is difficult to interpret, but the most significant factor during 1993-94 was the non-payment of bills without supply disconnection. It is estimated that the falling internal demand will put Russia in the position by 2010 of being able roughly to double its exports to Europe compared with 1993. This could be at relatively low cost since the requirement for investment in production and transmission facilities will not be large. The second author examines economic factors that will decided the size of the Russian ''gas bubble''. Uncertainties in domestic demand open up a wide range of scenarios. The predictions of the first author are regarded as an extreme ''low demand case''. Factors which could increase demand are an anticipated turnaround in the Russian economy in the mid 1990s and the likelihood of energy intensive industries, in which gas would have a competitive advantage, remaining as the backbone of the economy. The third contribution discusses natural gas supply and demand forecasts for Western Europe and concludes that the completion of the Gamal-Europe project, completing a second gas supply line from Russia to Europe, is essential. AbstractAbstract
[en] In a number of particle physics experiments fast discrimination between pions and kaons is required. At high momenta a Cerenkov detector is the most appropriate for that purpose. In general a limited amount of space is available for such a detector, which imposes severe limitations on the design. In this paper the authors present a detector in which the Cerenkov UV-light is produced in a thin layer (4 cm) of a liquid-FC72 radiator in which a row of null 2 cm quartz tubes is immersed. The light is detected in these tubes. Inside a tube a wire is stretched along the axis as anode and parallel wires on the inner circumference function as the cathode. The tubes are operated with TMAE vapor without additional counting gas, so that each tube acts as an elementary low pressure proportional chamber. Using this principle the response of charged particles passing the detector is suppressed. Computer simulations have shown that good pion/kaon discrimination can be obtained. After a pilot study with one tube light detector the authors constructed a small 20 x 20 cm2 prototype Cerenkov detector which is described

AbstractAbstract
[en] High-Tc GdBa2Cu3O7-δ superconductor bolometers with operation temperatures near 89 K, large receiving areas of 0.95mm2 and very high detectivity have been made. The bolometers are supported by 0.62 μm thick silicon nitride membranes. A specially developed silicon-on-nitride layer was used to enable the epitaxial growth of the high-Tc superconductor. Using a gold black absorption layer an absorption efficiency for wavelengths between 70 and 200 μm of about 83% has been established. The noise of the best devices is fully dominated by the intrinsic phonon noise of the thermal conductance G, and not by the 1/f noise of the superconducting film. The temperature dependence of the noise and the resulting optimum bias temperature have been investigated. In the analysis the often neglected effect of electrothermal feedback has been taken into account. The minimum electrical noise equivalent power (NEP) of a bolometer with a time constant τ of 95 ms is 2.9pW/Hz1/2 which corresponds with an electrical detectivity D* of 3.4x1010cmHz1/2/W. Similar bolometers with τ=27ms and NEP=3.8pW/Hz1/2 were also made. No degradation of the bolometers could be observed after vibration tests, thermal cycling and half a year storage. Measurements of the noise of a Pr doped YBa2Cu3O7-δ film with Tc=40K show that with such films the performance of air bridge type high-Tc bolometers could be improved. copyright 1997 American Institute of Physics

AbstractAbstract
[en] The double-differential coincidence cross section for the reaction 1H(e,e'p)π0 has been measured at Q2=0.1(GeV/c)2 in a range in the invariant mass of 2--14 MeV above threshold. From the angular dependence of the data values of the pion s-wave multipoles E0+ and L0+ have been extracted. The results are compared to predictions from chiral perturbation theory and models based on an effective Lagrangian. None of the models is able to describe both the E0+ and the L0+ multipoles

AbstractAbstract
[en] The ratio of neutron and proton yields at quasifree kinematics was measured for the reactions 2H(e,e'n) and 2H(e,e'p) at momentum transfers Q2=0.125, 0.255, 0.417, and 0.605(GeV/c)2, detecting the neutron and the proton simultaneously in the same scintillator array. The neutron detection efficiency was measured in situ with the 1H(γ,π+)n reaction. From this the ratio R of 2H(e,e'n) and 2H(e,e'p) cross sections was determined and used to extract the neutron magnetic form factor GnM in a model insensitive approach, resulting in an inaccuracy between 2.1% and 3.3% in GnM

AbstractAbstract
[en] High-momentum components of proton momentum distributions in 208Pb have been studied from 300 to 500 MeV/c with the (e, e' p) reaction. Cross sections were measured with 180 keV excitation-energy resolution for transitions to the low-lying 1/2+,3/2+,11/2-,5/2+, and 7/2+ states in 207Tl. The data are compared to distorted-wave impulse-approximation calculations with mean-field wave functions and with wave functions that include nucleon-nucleon correlations. The data are substantially larger than mean-field predictions. The observed excess strength at low excitation energy appears to be mainly due to long-range correlations and not to short-range and tensor correlations
