AbstractAbstract
[en] The authors report some measurements on the 4f core levels binding energy of W(110) surface and bulk atoms and show that the binding energy shifts give information on the surface structure. (Auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The authors have studied the vibrational spectra of acytylene adsorbed on Ni(111) at 150 K by electron energy loss spectroscopy. They observe both dipole scattering and vibrational excitation by electron impact via a broad resonance around 5 eV. The adsorbed acetylene is characterized by C-C and C-H stretching modes at 1200 and 2920 cm-1, respectively. This indicates a rehybridization of the molecule between sp2 and sp3 and a lowering of the C-C bond order down to approximately 1.5. This suggests that the acetylene is predominantly di-sigma-bonded to the surface and the structure resembles that of ethylene. (Auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The design, development, manufacture and characteristics of a photoelectron spectrometer are described, with particular emphasis given to the vacuum aspects. Experimental techniques are outlined by which one can obtain precise information of the ionisation energies of electrons in their valency bands. (C.F.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The machine for ion implantation in use at the Philips Physics Laboratory in the Netherlands, is described. It is a research machine with large beam width operating at 50-500 keV. The target substrates are placed on a mobile rotating disc under a fixed ion beam. Application of the technique in semiconductor technology is discussed. New applications in metallurgy such as protection against wear, corrosion and aging are elucidated as well as the ion beam mixing technique. (G.H.)

[en] A study by LEED-Auger is reported of the adsorption at room temperature of hydrogen and ethylene on a (100) aluminium single crystal face. The results suggest that fast hydrogen adsorption is occurring upon ethylene exposure whereas slow adsorption obtains upon hydrogen exposure. (Auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] In this paper the main principles of electron bombardment are discussed and an investigation is made of the most important factors which influence the emission and focussing of the electron source. Examples are given of the various types of electron guns which are developed for evaporation in vacuum, and the necessary accessories are mentioned. Furthermore, examples are discussed of various industrial applications of electron-beam evaporators. (Auth.)
