AbstractAbstract
[en] This is apparently an abridged version of a paper appeared in the International Coal Letters of July 1988. The prospects of fast breeder technology are judged very pessimistic. The French superfenix is considered a technical debacle and the French Novatome, the only one in the world able to master the whole of fast breeder technology, is facing bancrupcy. Also mentioned is the death of Shoreham in USA. (qui)

[en] Nigeria would also like to retain the option to explore and exploit nuclear possibilities for peaceful means. Radioactive mineral (uranium) deposits are known to exist in some parts of the country, and already the Nigerian Uranium Mining Company is actively engaged in uranium exploration. 1 fig. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper discusses a computerized method for determining which crude oil would be most profitable for a particular refinery. These computer-generated models of refinery operations show precisely how product yield changes when different crudes are put through a refinery. A producer can use these models to fine-tune his estimates of a crude's dollar-per-barrel value at a refinery, putting himself in a better bargaining position with the refiner. The intrinsic value generated by the model is not the selling price, but is the value of the products produced from the crude, minus the cost of refining. It is calculated by using accurate crude assays along with a model of the refiner's processing units

[en] A review of 10 papers presented at the 4th Energy Economics Conference in Surrey 1986 and published by P. Stevens (editor) in book form with the title 'Energy demand: prospects and trends 1987'. According to a particular paper nuclear energy is expected to increase its share from 5,3% in 1984 to 7,5% in 1990 (from power stations already under construction), and to 9% in 2000 although the latter figure 'will require a big effort'. [en] Advanced countries plan to withdraw existing aid programs from the developing countries if these fail to comply with environmental programs - in particular the CO2 emission reductions - emissioned by the former. On one hand, part of the developing countries are oil producers, on the other hand all of them need fossile fuels for the development, especially industrialization. A constructive solution of this clash of interests between the advanced- and the developing countries is called for

[en] This paper published fully in Financial Times Energy Economist of May 1988 and presented here in a summary, is based on: the decisions of EDF in France and CEGB in Great Britain to retire its older gas-cooled- and Magnox reactors; the DOE/EIA-0511 document 'An analysis of nuclear power plant operating costs' by J. Hewlett. The argument is that due to the fast technical progress in nuclear reactor design and growing regulatory requirements (e.g. those resulting from the TMI accident) it is more economic to dismantle the older power reactors before the end of their design life. AbstractAbstract
[en] Some potential problematic new developments on the European energy front are discussed in this paper which follows a talk given at an Australian university in June 1988. Coal, nuclear and natural gas are treated with their difficulties and/or problems. The present status of nuclear energy is considered as unfavourable in many countries of Europe and in the USA due to Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and the opposition of environmentalists. Oil is not considered at all. To the author's opinion, in the middle of 21st century or later things have to be reconsidered and nuclear energy may be again viewed differently, especially in Sweden.
