AbstractAbstract
[en] As a first step toward understanding strangeness production on nuclei, one needs to establish a sufficiently realistic description of the elementary process on a nucleon. In this purpose, a model independent approach which has already provided some interesting information on the strong points, and shortcomings, of various phenomenological formalisms as well as on the sensitivity of polarization observables to resonances in s-, u-, and t-channels is applied. AbstractAbstract
[en] Differential cross sections for quasielastic electron scattering on 40Ca have been measured at laboratory scattering angles of 45.5 degree, 90 degree, and 140 degree with bombarding energies ranging from 130 to 840 MeV. Transverse and longitudinal response functions have been extracted for momentum transfers from 300 to 500 MeV/c. Contrary to some previously reported results, the total observed longitudinal strength agrees with the relativistic Fermi gas prediction to within ± 18%

AbstractAbstract
[en] This renewal proposal requests continued funding for our program in experimental medium-energy nuclear physics. The focus of our program remains the understanding of the short-range part of the strong interaction in the nuclear medium. In the past three years we have focused our attention ever more sharply on experiments with real tagged photons at CEBAF. We are part of the Hall-B Collaboration at CEBAF. We are co-spokespersons on two approved CEBAF experiments, Photoreactions on 3He and Photoabsorption and Photofission of Nuclei, and we are preparing another, Nondiffractive Photoproduction of the ρ Meson with Linearly Polarized Photons, for presentation to the next CEBAF PAC. We are part of the team that is instrumenting the Photon Tagger and a high-energy tagged polarized-photon beam for Hall B; some of the instrumentation for these projects is being built at our Nuclear Detector Laboratory, under the auspices of The George Washington University Center for Nuclear Studies. Our recent measurements of pion scattering from 3H and 3He at LAMPF and of cluster knockout from few-body nuclei at NIKHEF have yielded very provocative results, showing the importance of the very light nuclei as a laboratory for quantifying important aspects of the nuclear many-body force. We look forward to expanding our studies of short-range forces in nuclei, particularly the very fight nuclei using electromagnetic probes and employing the extraordinary power of CEBAF and the CLAS

[en] Experimental data on the elastic magnetic form factor of 41Ca are analyzed in the framework of the self-consistent finite-Fermi system (FFS) theory. The analysis confirms the effect of suppression of the effective spin-isospin interaction amplitude (Migdal force) at high momentum transfers which was previously observed in the analysis of the M1-form factor of 89Y. 14 refs., 2 figs

AbstractAbstract
[en] The current status and scientific goal of CEBAF (The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility) are briefly presented. The project of the measurement of the flavor singlet form factor G degree of proton at C hall is outlined. A precise measurement of parity violating asymmetry in the scattering of polarized electron from a proton target enables one to explore the strange quark content in the proton

AbstractAbstract
[en] The HARP detection system is a novel device which can be used for both neutron detection and for the determination of neutron and proton polarizations in nuclear physics experiments. It is currently under construction by the HARP collaboration, comprising Utrecht University, ISN-Grenoble and NIKHEF-Amsterdam. The instrument will be completed in 1995. A brief description of HARP is given. (author)
