AbstractAbstract
[en] Brief description is given about the proposed radioactive nuclear beam (RNB) facility at KEK, which is being planned in the JHF in order to open up new regions of research in nuclear physics and related science. In this facility nicknamed as Exotic Nuclear Arena (E-arena), various nuclear species produced in 3 GeV-proton induced reactions are separated with an isotope separator on-line (ISOL), and are injected into heavy-ion linacs to be accelerated up to 6.5 MeV/nucleon. The new frontiers of research expected in the E-arena will include physics of exotic nuclei such as heavy neutron-rich nuclear species and superheavy elements, laboratory experiments on element synthesis in the universe, nondestructive material analysis, new medical diagnostics, etc. Also reported is new technical developments for the E-arena so far achieved through construction of the short-lived nuclear beam facility at Tanashi campus, which can accelerate short-lived radioactivities produced by a K = 68 cyclotron beam up to l MeV/nucleon by RFQ- and Interdigital-H linacs, and is therefore regarded as the first stage of the E-arena. AbstractAbstract
[en] Novel as well as puzzling aspects of strangeness (S = -l and S = -2) nuclear physics are highlighted. Opportunities to gain new insights into hypernuclear spectroscopy, structure, and weak decays and to contribute to the continuing effort to understand the fundamental baryon-baryon force are outlined. Connections to strangeness in heavy-ion reactions and astrophysics are noted. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] We have been preparing for the experiments on measuring the effect of parity non-conservation(PNC) in rare-earth atoms by using a laser beam. As the first step, the spectroscopic study using samarium atoms has been performed. Using our experimental results, the suitable levels have been chosen for measuring the PNC. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The principle of REX-ISOLDE (Radioactive beam Experiment at ISOLDE) is already described in an other contribution to this workshop. Compared to other existing or planned radioactive beam facilities REX-ISOLDE will have an unique system for bunching and charge breeding of the ions. It consists of a Penning trap for accumulation and bunching and an electron beam ion source for increasing the charge state, which is required for the post-acceleration. The efficiency of this set-up is expected to be up to 30% for sodium isotopes. (author)

[en] The laser ion source has been introduced and applied to some on line experiments at ISOLDE. The efficiency of the ion source is 1 - 20%. The development of the ion source is going on in order to increase the number of applicable elements, to increase the efficiency and to increase the element selectivity. The laser ion source, have potentials for isomer separation, and production of polarized ion beams. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Our job at this workshop is to try to see where present trends are leading us in various domains of research and to attempt to extrapolate these trends to the Japan Hadron Facility, several years in the future. The topics covered below are atomic and nuclear physics possibilities using a hypothetical low energy JHF antiproton beam. In both cases there is (and has been for a number of years) an extensive programme of research based mainly on LEAR, the CERN Low Energy Antiproton Ring. This machine, after some fourteen years of service, was closed down in December 1996. As this was an economy measure, a great deal of discussion took place on whether some of the most promising parts of the LEAR research programme could be continued at CERN in a more economical way. This was found to be possible for extremely high-precision laser spectroscopic studies of the simplest antiproton-containing atoms antihydrogen, antiprotonic helium and protonium (P-bar e+, p-bar αe-, and P-bar p respectively). The trick was to recuperate a large part of the hardware of the old CERN Antiproton Collector (AC) and some elements of LEAR itself, and to refurbish these to deliver antiproton bunches of some 107 particles to the experimenters approximately once per minute. The new machine, known as the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) is described by Stephan Maury elsewhere in these proceedings, and will serve as a kind of bridge between LEAR and the JHF. While the low intensity, pulsed supply of antiprotons to be provided by the AD is perfectly adequate for a research programme on antiproton-containing atoms, the same is not so for the nuclear physics experiments that were another important feature of LEAR's declining years. In the following one therefore has to bear in mind that while the atomic physics programme will continue over this bridging period of several years, a nuclear physics programme would be have to be started up again at JHF more or less where LEAR left it.
