AbstractAbstract
[en] The 101 papers of the conference deal with the problems of the danger o f groundwater contamination by uranium mining activities, tailings anddumps. Further topics under discussion were the flooding of old mines, remediation strategies for tailings and dumps, hydrogeological, hydrochemical and hydrogeochemical problems and theirsolutions by several monitoring and analytical methods as well as model ling tools. As the first European conference of this kind regarding ura nium mining under hydrogeological aspects, this conference received a b road interest and positive feedback. Especially the cooperation between theoreticians and practicians is very necessary. This was another dist inctive feature of this conference

[en] The mineralisation of rainwater towards seepage of heaps and mine waters in pyrite containing ore mines including their time dependent chemical evolution have been calculated by using a new geochemical transport model. The obtained results are in reasonable agreement with averaged analytical data from the Ronneburg uranium mining area. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Within the design process of long-term stable dump covers the assessment of biotical and abiotical effects which can alterate their long-term functionality is a key issue. Essential impacts on dump cover layers are bioturbation and root penetration. Based on long-term field and laboratory tests as well as extended literature studies it is possible to define first key values with regard to biotical influence of dump cover layers. The paper presents results of basic investigations with regard to root penetration on different, partially covered dumps at uranium mining sites in Saxony and Thuringia in comparison to results from autochthonous soils. Beyond that the intensity of root penetration and its perennial trends impressively demonstrate the dependence and interaction between penetration intensity and soil water balance (e.g. effective field capacity, seepage water). Changes in soil physical parameters over the depth (pH, exchangeable magnesium) affect the root penetration characteristics of particular species. Besides root penetration the bioturbation is the essential biotic impact one has to take into account. In some cases bioturbation can affect the functionality of all cover layers. Post-mining utilization has an essential impact on the rate of bioturbation and especially on the long-term stability of dump covers. The efficiency of each cover layer is limited by the biotical alteration of the cover system, especially over longer time periods. The pedological potential of the cover material used has a limiting effect. Cover layers can only temporarily maintain there initial technical functionality. So one has to compensate their decreasing technical functionality at least partially by acceptable natural balances using the actual abiotical and biotical influences (e.g. site-specific transpiration rates). Wechselwirkungen zum Wasserhaushalt (u.a. nutzbare Feldkapazitaet, Sickerwasser). AbstractAbstract
[en] The release of radionuclides from Algerian bentonite/cement matrix has been measured experimentally using static and dynamic testing procedures. The waste forms were cement/sand and bentonite/cement matrices contaminated with Cs-137. To characterise radionuclide/waste form combination, two parameters, diffusion (D) and distribution coefficients (α) were used. (D) is an effective diffusion coefficient that describes the kinetic behaviour and is most easily determined using Soxhlet test, whereas, (α) describes the distribution of radionuclide between aqueous and solid phases at equilibrium and is best measured in static test. Leach rates obtained being very low. Distribution coefficient values have showed that the bentonite has relatively a high degree of fixation. It was concluded that the matrix under study seems play a role for the immobilisation. (orig.)
