[en] The primary role of agriculture is to produce a reliable supply of wholesome food to feed the world's population, safely and without adverse effects on the environment. Pesticides have a crucial part to play in reducing the loss of food during production and after harvesting, and this article discusses how the use of pesticides can be made more efficient. Two particular examples of safer and more effective pesticide delivery systems are described, relating to tsetse fly control in Africa and to the control of weeds in a rice paddy or rice-fish mixed ecosystem. 45 refs, 6 figs

AbstractAbstract
[en] Nuclear applications pervade all important branches of modern medicine. The large-scale production of radiopharmaceuticals is an important activity in many countries, and ensures the ready availability of highly purified, well tested and authenticated products and the establishment of well define procedures for their safety and efficacious use in patients. The IAEA's activities in promoting and strengthening radioisotope and radiopharmaceutical production have contributed in a major way to upgrading health care and providing the benefits of advanced nuclear techniques for disease diagnosis and alleviation of suffering in developing countries. 7 figs, 2 tabs
