AbstractAbstract
[en] The formation and decay of excited nuclei with masses around A=200 are studied for excitation energy, ε* ranging from 0 to 6 MeV/u. For ε* values up to 6 MeV/n, the various decay channels ending with one (evaporation), two (fission) or more (3, 4, 5) fragments still compete. In case of multifragment emission, we find that: - the life-time of the excited nucleus before breaking is equal to 100-150 fm/c for ε* values around 5 MeV/u, - the emission time (i.e. the interval between the emission of two fragments) evolves from a large value (τ>1000 fm/c, sequential decay) when ε* equals 2-3 MeV/u to a very small value (τ<50 fm/c, simultaneous decay) for ε* values around 5 MeV/u. AbstractAbstract
[en] Multifragmentation of the system α + 197Au has been studied at incident energies of 1 and 3.6 GeV/nucleon with the new 4π setup, ''FASA''. Mass energy and velocity of a few fragments are measured with high precision using time-of-flight telescopes, while for the other fragments, global multiplicity information is obtained from 55 CsI(Tl) detectors covering the main part of 4π. Very high mean IMF (intermediate mass fragment) multiplicities of left angle M right angle imf=5.1 ± 0.8 are observed at the higher incident energy. Applying the statistical multifragmentation model of Gross a breakup density ρ/ρ0 of only 1/6 to 1/8 is deduced from the relative velocity measured for IMF-IMF coincidences at large relative angles and excitation energies increasing from 4.5 to 5.5 MeV/nucleon with increasing incident energy.
