AbstractAbstract
[en] Fuel Safety Research Specialists' Meeting, which was organized by Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, was held on March 4-5, 2002 at JAERI in Tokai Establishment. Purposes of the Meeting are to exchange information and views on LWR fuel safety topics among the specialist participants from domestic and foreign organizations, and to discuss the recent and future fuel research activities in JAERI. In the Meeting, presentations were given and discussions were made on general report of fuel safety research activities, fuel behaviors in normal operation and accident conditions, FP release behaviors in severe accident conditions, and JAERI's ''Advanced LWR Fuel Performance and Safety Research Program''. A poster exhibition was also carried out. The Meeting significantly contributed to planning future program and cooperation in fuel research. This proceeding integrates all the pictures and papers presented in the Meeting. The 10 of the presented papers are indexed individually. (J.P.N.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Proton Induced X-ray Emission Technique (PIXE) has been used in analysing Gold standards of 22, 20, 18, and 14 karats with a proton beam of energy 3.3 MeV at the newly commissioned Folded Tandem Ion Accelerator (FOTIA). Well resolved Au and Ag X-rays were detected at a current of 3 nA. Percentage values of gold and silver were calculated and were checked with those obtained by Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Method and were found to be in agreement with the certified values as well as those obtained by XRF. AbstractAbstract
[en] In this paper, we present design and different experimental parameters of 20 Ci 137Cs based Compton spectrometer. The performance of spectrometer is tested using Al and Yb samples. It is found that the geometry designed by us employing 160 deg scattering angle, collimation etc. leads to a well defined intermediate momentum resolution. The statistics and resolution of data are sufficient to measure the electronic structure of materials through their Compton profiles. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Vertical position and angular divergence monitoring of synchrotron radiation are the two key parameters for efficient performance of the beam lines. For a high brightness third generation synchrotron radiation source like Indus-2, photon beam position monitoring is required. A two-blade synchrotron radiation beam position monitor prototype has been made and tested on Indus-1 CAT-TGM beamline. Testing and calibration of this photon beam position monitor is reported in this paper. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The effect of low energy N+ ion irradiation on InP samples has been studied using depth resolved Doppler S-parameter measurements. InP samples have been irradiated with 85 keV N+ ions to a dose of 1 x 1013 to 1 x 1016 cm-2. Defect sensitive lineshape S-parameter and the complimentary W-parameter have been deduced at various depths. From the variation of S and from the slope of S-W correlation plots, it is concluded that monovacancies are present up to a dose of 1 x 1015 cm-2, while divacancies are present in 1 x 1016 cm-2 dose sample. AbstractAbstract
[en] Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films were deposited on glass substrates by RF magnetron sputtering. The influence of substrate temperature on the structural, electrical and optical properties was investigated. With increase in substrate temperature, the crystallinity of the films increased. The films exhibited (111) and (100) preferred orientations. All the films showed high transmittance (>85%) in the visible region. The band gap of the films increased with increase in substrate temperature. Films deposited with a substrate temperature of 150 degC showed the lowest resistivity of 2.1 x 10-3 Ωcm and highest mobility of 17.8 cm2V-1s-1. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Thermally grown thin films of LiF were irradiated with 150 MeV Ag ions at various fluences. The quality of films was studied using GAXRD, which shows that films are c-axis oriented. It also shows that grain size decreases and the intensity of (200) orientation enhances with fluence, which is the preferential orientation. These results are further confirmed by photoluminescence studies, which shows that the concentration of F3+ and F2 color centers decreases with ion fluence due to increase in surface to volume ratio under Swift Heavy Ion (SHI) irradiation. AbstractAbstract
[en] We report here the first synchrotron radiation (SR)-based X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectra for Os at LIII-edge in geo- and cosmo-chemical materials. Samples were Negrillos meteorite, a II-A type iron meteorite, and a Pt ore specimen, aggregates of coarse grained Pt-Fe alloys, from the Choco district, Columbia. X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra of Os are presented for Negrillos, which has an Os abundance of 65 ppm, as well as for the platinum-group mineral (PGM). The XANES spectra showed that Os in the iron meteorite and the PGM chiefly exist as a metallic species. The average interatomic distance of Os in the Pt ore from the Choco district are calculated from the EXAFS spectra. The results suggest that the neighboring atoms of Os are not Pt. Instead, they are most likely Os and Ir. This is consistent with the common occurrence of fine lamellae of Os and iridosmine as exsolution products of Pt-Fe alloys. Furthermore, this confirms the limited solubility of Os in Pt-Fe alloys. EXAFS could thus be useful for identifying the host phases of Os in natural samples. This study has verified that the chemical state of Os in natural samples can be determined using XAFS. It is expected that further application of the XAFS technique to Os speciation in natural samples will help to elucidate Re/Os fractionation processes in the Re-Os isotopic system. (author)
