[en] The electronic structure of ferromagnetic and semiconducting Eu hydrides, intermediate valent and magnetic TmSe/sub 1-x/Te/sub x/ and Tm/sub 1-x/Eu/sub x/Se compounds is explained and measured by optical and magnetooptical means. It is then brought into connection with the magnetic exchange. A magnetic exchange induced valence transition is presented
