AI is transforming industries, driving innovation, and boosting efficiency, but its energy demands will pose a challenge to ESG goals. In an article by Fredrik Jansson, atNorth's Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer, he examines how the Nordics' clean energy, cool climate, and energy-efficient data centers can help businesses align AI innovation with sustainability targets. "The Nordics benefit from a cool and consistent climate which in itself allows for more energy efficient cooling of digital infrastructure. For example, Shearwater GeoServices achieved a 92% CO2 reduction and 85% cost savings by moving part of its IT infrastructure to atNorth. The future of digitalization depends on making sustainable choices today." Read the full article here https://lnkd.in/d6s2iUjS #Sustainability #AI #DigitalInnovation #ESG #atNorth

atNorth facilities are designed to support greater computing densities; leading to a future proof platform, better space utilization, more efficient energy usage and significantly greater computing performance. Our partnership with CoolIT Systems means we can leverage advanced Direct Liquid Cooling (DLC) technology to deliver concentrated cooling where it’s needed most. This approach enables higher rack densities, improves heat reuse efficiency, and significantly reduces power consumption - all while supporting sustainable operations. At our SWE01 data center, this innovative cooling system maximizes heat recovery and minimizes energy usage, empowering businesses to achieve unmatched efficiency and performance in high-density computing environments. Learn how CoolIT’s technology and atNorth’s sustainable colocation can elevate your performance. Our guest blog this month, by Michał Tarnawski – Global Director of IT, Opera reflects on the importance of green energy to power their AI supercomputer. Opera aims to innovate at speed and scale, whilst maintaining their sustainability ethos. The Opera Iceland KEF-1 supercomputer is an NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD and has been designed to minimize its impact on the environment. atNorth’s location in Iceland is perfectly suited for this, with an abundance of carbon-free hydroelectric and geothermal power for energy and free air cooling. Additionally, teamwork makes projects of this scale, size, and complexity possible. "With atNorth in a position to house our AI supercomputer immediately, we could get this project off the ground and running in less than six months. atNorth’s team has been nothing but exceptional: from initial service delivery and execution to their continued excellence in service, everything they deliver is of the highest quality." stated Michal Read his insightful blog here and discover how the key to successful innovation lies in teamwork. https://lnkd.in/emPZ58Tw #AI #Supercomputers

Iceland's strong connectivity, with multiple transatlantic cables and renewable energy sources, makes it an ideal, eco-friendly data center location. Did you know that latency to New York and London is under 40 milliseconds, faster than many European countries? Three major subsea cables, Farice-1, DANICE, and Iceland-Scotland (IRIS), link Iceland to the rest of the world, and our strategic geographic location in Iceland ensures all our atNorth facilities benefit from this connectivity. Find out more in Roderick Beck’s posts below https://lnkd.in/eZtZbAKM #Connectivity #atNorth #SubseaCables #Connectivity #Iceland
Luminous Real Estate and Telecom OÜ: I source Layer 1-3 network capacity & computing power for clients. Background: Economist, Real Estate Development in Budapest & Tallinn, & Sales at Hibernia Atlantic.
Where the data centres go, the subsea cables follow. Iceland is emerging as a data centre hub for computation and disaster recovery as opposed to serving customer requests. The country has abundant hydro and geothermal resources, and its cool climate (1.85 centigrade annual average temperature) is ideal for heat spewing data centres. Recently the PTT was divided into an independent wholesale infrastructure unit that sells network capacity on a non-discriminatory basis. The government also financed the very high capacity 132 Tbps IRIS cable that connects the country to Ireland, the UK, and Denmark. Living standards are some of the highest in the world with little corruption, high life expectancy, and a healthy democracy. Immigrants are welcomed. It is the only European country where the population is surging and the economy very strong. For more details on the data centre scene, click on https://lnkd.in/d3ZSW82X. I spent two weeks there in 2022 planting trees as part of a forest restoration effort. The Vikings cut down the island's trees. Total design subsea capacity is 182 Tbps for an island with 400,000 inhabitants up from 300,000 in 2010. Probably the highest per capita transmission rate in the world. The government has deployed an island wide fibre optic ring for redundancy and spaced the cable landings for physical diversity.
