🌋Leading Through Uncertainty: Few Lessons from the Field🌋 As a leader during the recent natural disaster, I’ve learned some valuable lessons and had a few (nervous) laughs along the way that I wanted to share. 1️⃣ Take One Day at a Time: Every morning started with a fresh estimation of conditions, and trust me, some days required a very strong cup of coffee. For a planner like me, riding the waves of uncertainty was a challenge. But hey, our plans have never been better—thanks to the daily caffeine boost! 2️⃣ No One Accomplishes Big Things Alone: Building on people’s strengths became our mantra. It was tough not being on the field with my team, especially since we had no knowledge of how safe Grindavíkurbær was at the time. I had to rely on them to perform selfless tasks like refilling the generator during power outages, tending to our animals and making crucial repairs. Kudos to my incredible team for handling the unknown with such bravery! Meanwhile, I focused on pushing for access to our facility and talking to the right people -definitely more in my wheelhouse. 3️⃣ Build a Strong Network: I had only been with Aurora Abalone for two months when the volcanic activity started. In the face of uncertainty, putting a sharp (and steep) focus on building a strong network at all community levels proved invaluable. A big shoutout to everyone who helped us navigate through 💛 💙 4️⃣ Optimism is Key: Amidst all the chaos, focusing on progress kept our spirits high. Celebrating even the smallest victories made a huge difference. It's also important to just keep going. Do not stop working and always keep an eye on what’s ahead. Leading through a natural disaster has taught me so much about resilience, teamwork, and the power of a positive mindset. Reflecting on the past months of our operations in Grindavíkurbær, it's clear that our scale-up Aurora Abalone faced unprecedented challenges. The journey has been intense - constantly crafting new plans only to see them evolve or dissolve within moments. However, amidst these trials, we've discovered invaluable growth opportunities. Our operations and biomass endured setbacks, but thanks to the dedication of these amazing colleagues in our aquaculture team, Ásgeir and Ingolfur, the status of our abalone is steadily improving and expanding. Their efforts embody the spirit of resilience and teamwork that define our journey.
