INE's sole purpose is to eliminate the use of fossil fuels in Icelandic transport.

About us

Icelandic New Energy was founded in 1999 following a declaration from the Government of Iceland declaring that Iceland intended to explore the possibility of transitioning from a fossil fuel paradigm to utilizing hydrogen for transport. The company was formed as a public-private partnership with key Icelandic stakeholders involved (current shareholders) along with Daimler AG, Shell International (Shell Hydrogen), and Norsk Hydro (later Statoil). In its 20+ years, INE has created, coordinated, and participated in numerous projects related to alternative fuels in transport. Early on, the focus was solely on land mobility but increasingly, the company became involved with marine applications and port-related activities. INE works on local initiatives, on national-level projects, collaborates with Nordic stakeholders, and participates in EU-level consortia.
