Two-Year Journey at Viðlagafjara ✨ On February 17, 2023, Sigurjón Óskarsson, head of the ÓS family—an anchor investor in LAXEY—broke ground in Viðlagafjara. Now, two years later, we are proud to see Section One nearing completion, with the first batch already housed in our operational post-Smolt facility. It has been incredible to witness the steady progress on-site, as the grow-out site takes shape while work on the smolt station progressed in parallel, leading to its full operational status in August 2024. From the very first day, Sigurjón has been hands-on in this journey, and his commitment remains just as strong today as preparations for Section Two have begun. He was there when the first shovel hit the ground, and he is still here as the next phase takes shape. It was fitting that two years later, we had the pleasure of welcoming Sverre Vormedal from Benchmark Genetics, who delivered Batch Five. The team was, as always, well-prepared and made sure that the new batch was placed quickly and securely in the hatchery.

We greatly appreciate this opportunity to showcase our work and discuss the role of sustainable aquaculture in Iceland’s economy. It is especially meaningful to welcome the committee so early in its term, and we are honored by their interest in our industry. A big thank you to the committee members for their visit and engaging discussions!

  • Students from the GRÓ UNESCO Fisheries Programme Visit Benchmark Genetics Iceland Last Thursday, January 16th, we welcomed a group of students currently in Iceland to study aquaculture and fisheries sciences under the GRÓ UNESCO Fisheries Training Programme. They will be in the country for six months as part of the GRÓ UNESCO programme. The group was accompanied by Dr. Theodór Kristjánsson, a genetics specialist at the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute, who teaches them as part of their studies. The students come from various countries, including Kenya, Angola, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Tanzania, and Indonesia. Benedikt Hálfdánarson, the company's Managing Director, welcomed the group, provided an introduction to our operations, and guided them on a tour of our incubation center and production facilities in Vogar. During their visit, the students received an in-depth presentation on the company's operations, focusing on Benchmark Genetics Iceland's expertise in genetic selection and the production of high-quality Atlantic salmon eggs. They also had the opportunity to explore the incubation center, which plays a crucial role in the production process, as well as our farming facilities. Benchmark Genetics Iceland places great emphasis on providing students and professionals worldwide with insights into our operations and our role in the development and sustainable utilization of fish stocks. Such visits strengthen our connections with international professionals and create opportunities for future collaboration. From undergoing a strategic review of our company to launching an optimized genetics product portfolio - SalmoPrime®, SalmoBoost®, and SalmoRobust®-we stayed committed to delivering excellence in quality, biosecurity, and precise delivery. • Volcanic Eruption in Iceland: Benchmark Genetics Operations Unaffected At 11:14 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20th, a volcanic eruption began in the Sundhnúks crater series near Grindavík in the Reykjanes area. While the eruption has impacted the Grindavík road, all other key infrastructure—including energy, hot water, and air transport—remains unaffected. Benchmark Genetics Iceland's facilities, located at a safe distance from the eruption area, operate as normal and are well prepared for any risks associated with volcanic activities due to comprehensive contingency plans.  According to local media (RÚV), the eruption activity is already subsiding, and we do not anticipate any disruptions to our operations.

🔷 The fourth and largest batch has arrived! 🔷 Today, we received the fourth batch of salmon ova, our largest to date, supplied by Benchmark Genetics Iceland . We were pleased to have Sverre Vormedal from their team accompany us for the delivery. 📦🚚 When the ova arrive, it’s essential to ensure they are placed quickly and securely in the hatchery. Preparation and good organization are, therefore, key to a smooth process, which, of course, went very well today, as always. You can see from the smiles on our team’s faces that everything went very well. 😃 👍 We now have biomass across all systems in our Smolt station: the hatchery, as well as RAS 1, RAS 2, and RAS 3.

  • 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐏𝐬 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐀𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 🐟 This week, Benchmark Genetics welcomed Guðrún Hafsteinsdóttir, Iceland's Minister of Justice, along with MPs, to showcase our cutting-edge aquaculture operations at our land-based units producing families, broodstock and ova for the global Atlantic Salmon industry🟠🟠🟠 Our CEO, Benedikt Hálfdanarson Hálfdánarson, warmly welcomed our guests. Axel Fannar Borgarsson the Station Manager of our Incubation Center, along with Guðmundur S Benediktsson, Station Manager at Vogavík, guided them through our facilities. Our guests had a tour of the incubation center /Hrognahús and got a chance to observe our broodstock at various developmental stages. The visit also offered insight into our crucial Monday morning routines, when staff assess broodstock readiness for spawning. The Head of Production at Benchmark Genetics, Dr. Jónas Jónasson praises the Icelandic government for supporting the aquaculture industry, particularly as it becomes one of the country’s key economic drivers. “The government has been very supportive, but they are also focused on ensuring that the industry remains sustainable. All our licenses comply with strict Icelandic environmental laws, and there’s a strong focus on minimizing the industry’s impact on nature. Iceland’s unique land and water resources make it attractive for land-based projects, and the regulators are positive about these developments.” – he highlights. It is invaluable to have the opportunity to showcase our operations and provide insight into our work, and we truly appreciate that these key representatives took the time to visit us! 👉 Read more about the visit and Benchmark’s vision here: https://lnkd.in/dXjPz6uf #benchmarkgenetics #aquaculture #iceland #salmonfarming
