Ocean Regeneration to Bioproducts - Developing a regenerative circular economy with materials made from seaweed 🌊
Chi siamo
Who are we? We are a small team of scientists, engineers, academics, and climate change professionals who provide macroalgae cultivation and production technologies to create a circular net-zero carbon economy. We are geographically dispersed with a global reach and the ability to make positive local impact. What do we do? We combine academic research and tried-and-tested macro algae cultivation techniques to capture carbon, absorb heavy metals and toxins, improve water quality and ecosystems, and regenerate the ocean. But we don't stop there! Macro algae cultivation produces large amounts of biomass and we want to use that too. How? We partner with the industrial and commercial sectors to defossilise supply chains, diversify sustainability portfolios, and enable the production of bioproducts. These include bioenergy (bioethanol and biogas), fertiliser and bioplastic. Why do we do this? To regenerate the ocean and create bioproducts with macro algae that improve quality of life and secure a sustainable future for us all!

🌊 Exciting News from Algae Scope 🌊 We're delighted to have been selected out of 200 startups to participate in the Faros Accelerator Blue Economy! 🚀 This is an incredible opportunity to engage with FAROS's broad industrial network, and we’re already seeing the value of these connections. 🔹 Why is this so important? Italy’s maritime heritage and strategic position in the Mediterranean make it a logical natural hub for the blue economy. With its rich coastline, Italy is uniquely positioned to lead the charge in sustainable, ocean-based industries. 🔹 What’s driving this shift? Italian industries are embracing bio-based alternatives that offer cost-effective environmentally-friendly solutions. Why? - The problem of dangerous PFAS chemicals is well-known in Italy and these regulations are tightening, so companies know that if they fail to adapt, they must face penalties, fees, and sanctions. - With more than 4 billion euros in turnover, Italy ranks first in Europe for the production of technical textiles and fourth in the world. Establishing seaweed farming, and testing seaweed bio-products, including our water-resistant and fire-retardant seaweed bio-coating, in Italy makes strategic sense against this backdrop! - Corporate reporting requirements are increasing, creating pressure to show clear progress in reducing carbon emissions and meeting SDG/ESG goals. - Addressing the root cause of toxic chemicals at the source isn’t just possible—it’s an economically-viable and organisationally-smart solution. 🔹 We are excited about the potential for innovation in the blue economy here in Italy and the broader global impact that can follow. 🌱🌊 #BlueEconomy #Innovation #Sustainability #BioBasedSolutions #FAROS #CircularEconomy #ESG #SDGs #SustainableFuture Natasha Yamamura, Dr. Elvira Rakova, Dr Farshid Pahlevani Alejandra Noren Fiona McOmish
🌊🚀 10 Startups to innovate the #BlueEconomy sector From sustainable seaweed bioproducts and zero-emission propulsion systems to AI-driven maritime infrastructure and electric boat sharing: meet the startups driving the blue economy with innovation, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. As the 3rd edition of Faros Accelerator is in full swing, we can’t be prouder to look at the remarkable results they’re achieving. 🌍 PFAS Regulations Tightening in 2025 This useful article summarises a wave of new PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) restrictions and scrutiny across Europe, the US, and Asia, and considers the regulatory and corporate challenges and opportunities for companies and industries in 2025. Some developments include: 🔹 Europe: The European Union is moving ahead with: stricter PFAS proposal restrictions; expanding the list of substances of very high concern (SVHC) and persistant organic pollulants (POPs) under EU REACH; and with the implementation of the Stockholm Convention. Companies must ensure compliance or face penalties. 🔹 PFAS Reporting requirements in Canada, placing accountability for industries across the supply chain. 🔹 Increased regulations on PFAS in the US, with stricter reporting, and a rise in litigation. 🔹 A focus on the full Product Life Cycle (LCA) that shows the environmental footprint throughout a product's entire lifespan. https://lnkd.in/eFTVifeW 🔑 Opportunities for Innovation: With every regulatory shift, there is also an opportunity for innovation. Addressing the root causes of PFAS at the source and finding bio-based alternatives offers a forward-thinking corporate strategy that aligns with sustainability development goals and regulatory demands. Our solutions made 100% from seaweed offer one such opportunity. How is your organisation preparing for stricter PFAS regulations? #PFAS #Sustainability #Regulations #EnvironmentalImpact #ChemicalInnovation #CorporateResponsibility #Seaweed #BlueEconomy #biotechnology #SustainableDevelopmentGoals #BioBasedAlternatives #LCA Natasha Yamamura Dr. Elvira Rakova Dr Farshid Pahlevani Alejandra Noren Fiona McOmish

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of man-made chemicals used in products, like materials that are water-resistant and fire-resistant. They are often known as "forever chemicals" because they don't break down easily in the environment or in the human body. The main problems with PFAS include: 🌍 Environmental Contamination: PFAS have spread widely in water, soil, and air. ❤️🩹 Health Risks: Over 200 studies link PFAS to serious health problems, including cancer, liver damage, obesity, infertility and immune system problems. ⚠️ Persistence: PFAS accumulate over time, leading to long-term exposure which will persist until a natural alternative for these chemicals is adopted. Not only does PFAS accumulate in the environment, but they also remain in the body for years, causing cumulative damage. Children's PFAS levels are currently up to 4 x higher than adults. ☣️ PFAS products involve the use of fossil fuels, and their production contributes to pollution. The cost to clean up and deal with the health and social impacts of PFAS is significant - €18k per kg - and is a major ongoing challenge. Algae Scope has developed a water resistant, fire retardant bio-coating made 100% from seaweed that can replace PFAS chemicals that are used for these purposes. PFAS is present in 50% of textiles, with items labelled 100% cotton or cotton and synthetic blends containing the highest amounts of PFAS. Our bio-coating is effective on cotton and polyester, and we are currently testing with customers on a broader range of fibres and materials too. Our solution is cost-comparative, safer and scalable.
