After Italian citizenship is granted through marriage or residency, and the decree is issued, the individual has 6 months to swear allegiance to the Italian Republic in front of a town hall or consular officer. The oath includes the commitment to be faithful to the Republic, and abide by the Constitution and laws of the State. Following the oath, the individual is officially an Italian citizen and can proceed to apply for an Italian identity card and a passport. If the oath is not taken within the specified legal timeframe, the Ministry of the Interior issues a declaration of forfeiture due to failure to swear allegiance. Consequently, the granted Italian citizenship decree becomes void, and the individual must submit a new application.
