Digital Twins for Oncology On February 4th, at the Open Science Bar meeting, Paolo Zunino, Professor of Numerical Analysis at the MOX Laboratory, Department of Mathematics of the Politecnico di Milano presented the new developments brought by Digital Twins technology in the context of precision medicine, with a seminar entitled “Digital Twins: a journey from mathematics to computational oncology ”. Dr. Tiziana Rancati, researcher at the Data Science Unit of the Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori acted as discussant. Digital twins are virtual models that simulate real-world entities using advanced mathematical techniques. Originally used in fields like automotive and aerospace engineering, Digital twins are now making their way into medicine, particularly in oncology, to personalize treatment and improve outcomes. In healthcare, Digital twins go beyond being simple replicas of a patient or disease. Instead, they serve as holistic systems that integrate diverse types of medical data—ranging from clinical records to genomics and imaging. This integration enables predictions about disease progression and supports decision-making for tailored treatments. The key challenge is designing Digital twins that can handle the vast complexity of medical data while remaining flexible enough to adapt to individual patients. 💥 Are we sure that high doses are the primary driver of skin toxicity in breast radiotherapy? Come and see what we found in our analysis on 1,500 patients published in Radiotherapy and Oncology 💥 This is the second article, based on my medical physics thesis work, and it describes a model for acute #skinreactions in whole breast #radiotherapy based on the dose distribution of the dermis (5mm superficial layers). The model was further validated during Monica Maria Vincenzi's master's thesis, which included a large cohort of #breastcancer patients treated with #3DCRT #VMAT and #TomoDirect at Ospedale San Raffaele. This achievement showcases the dedication and collaboration of everyone involved in this project.
