🌍 Biodiversity & Agrifood Systems: The Road Ahead From February 25-27, the FAO headquarters in Rome will host crucial negotiations on biodiversity, picking up where Cali left off. The focus? Transforming agrifood systems to ensure food security while preserving nature. Key topics on the agenda: 🔹 Financing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) 🔹 Strengthening biodiversity monitoring & reducing harmful incentives 🔹 Addressing pesticide risks & securing land tenure for Indigenous Peoples 🔹 Aligning agrifood systems with global biodiversity targets Biodiversity is not just an environmental issue—it’s the backbone of sustainable food production. Now is the time to move from agreements to action. Let's ensure that national strategies embed real, impactful solutions for a more sustainable future. #Biodiversity #AgrifoodSystems #Sustainability #COP16 #FAO #Rome

Did you know agriculture isn’t solely a human invention? Nearly 66 million years ago, following the catastrophic asteroid impact that ended the reign of the dinosaurs, fungus-farming ants pioneered their own form of #agriculture. This pivotal moment spurred an explosion in fungal diversity and set the stage for a remarkable coevolution between ants and fungi. This enduring symbiotic relationship not only revolutionized ant survival strategies but also continues to shape tropical ecosystems in profound ways. Delve into this extraordinary evolutionary process and recognize the profound influence of nature's innovation. #Science #Evolution #Nature #Ants #Fungi Source paper: https://lnkd.in/dP5sHDCp

In 2020, Earth’s vegetation reached record levels of growth, making it the greenest year observed since 2001. While pandemic lockdowns briefly reduced pollution, scientists found that the main drivers were rising CO2, increasing temperatures, and large-scale reforestation efforts especially in China and India. This surge in greenery highlights nature’s resilience, but experts warn that climate extremes, water shortages, and wildfires could reverse these gains. Continuous monitoring is essential to understand how ecosystems respond to environmental change and to develop strategies for long-term sustainability. 🌿🌎 #ClimateChange #Sustainability #Greening #Environment Source paper: https://lnkd.in/ez9_UCau

Scientists from Utrecht and #Wageningen Universities discovered that shaded plants efficiently use far-red light (700–750 nm) for #photosynthesis. Previously underestimated, this light spectrum enhances plant growth when combined with visible light. The findings could transform #greenhouse #horticulture, allowing growers to optimize artificial lighting and improve crop yields. By leveraging the full light spectrum, modern agriculture can become more efficient and sustainable. 🌍🌿 #SustainableFarming #PlantScience See research paper here: https://lnkd.in/d5FVUEwX

🌿🌍 Climate Change and Phenological Disruptions Across Species: the impacts of climate change are causing significant disruptions in the synchronized life cycles of plants, insects, and animals. A study by Thackeray et al. (2016) in Nature demonstrates how climate-induced phenological mismatches are occurring across various taxa and trophic levels. 🐝🌸 Increased temperatures and changing weather patterns are altering key seasonal events, such as plant flowering and insect emergence, leading to a misalignment in interactions that have been fine-tuned over millennia. These disruptions not only affect biodiversity but can also have cascading effects on ecosystems and food webs. Understanding these changes is crucial for developing strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change on biodiversity and ensure the stability of ecosystems. 🌍💚 #ClimateChange #Phenology #Biodiversity #Sustainability #Conservation

Think early humans only ate meat? Think again! 🥄 Recent findings near Israel’s Hula Valley challenge this long-held belief. Archaeologists discovered 780,000-year-old starch grains on stone tools, proving that #plantbased foods were central to ancient diets. These early hominids processed and consumed a wide range of plants, from acorns to aquatic vegetation, showing remarkable adaptability and ingenuity. This discovery also hints at the beginnings of plant cultivation techniques long before the advent of formal agriculture. Early humans weren’t just foragers, they were laying the groundwork for the agricultural practices that would come thousands of years later. Beyond sustenance, this study sheds light on the social and cognitive advancements of prehistoric humans, who likely worked in cooperative groups to gather and process food year-round. This groundbreaking research reshapes our understanding of early diets and highlights humanity’s deep-rooted connection to plant-based foods and nature, with echoes of agriculture's future. 🌿 Published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. https://lnkd.in/dP98rpfs #Archaeology #Evolution #PlantBasedDiet #AgricultureOrigins

🌟 Thrilled to share that I’ll be presenting our paper “Unsupervised Hierarchy-Agnostic Segmentation: Parsing Semantic Image Structure” at #NeurIPS2024 this afternoon! 🎉 Thanks to my co-author, Fiora Pirri, and the incredible team at DeepPlants for their invaluable collaboration and support. In this work, we tackle the challenging domain of unsupervised semantic segmentation by introducing a novel algebraic methodology for hierarchy-agnostic image parsing. Our approach leverages latent representations from self-supervised models to dynamically estimate semantic regions, ensuring smooth, unbiased segmentation across various datasets. We also propose innovative metrics to evaluate segmentation quality in this framework. If you're attending NeurIPS 2024, stop by East Exhibit Hall A-C from 4.30 PM, Panel #1502, to discuss this work, share ideas on how to improve the interpretability of machine representation in vision, and explore how unsupervised hierarchy-agnostic segmentation can redefine image analysis. Let’s connect! 🔗 Paper: https://lnkd.in/dcJGVPnK 🔗 GitHub: https://lnkd.in/dD9TcvmF #AI #MachineLearning #ComputerVision #UnsupervisedLearning #SemanticSegmentation #VisionUnderstanding
