“SMOTIES Toolbox. Design tools for the creative transformation of public spaces in small and remote places" edited by Valentina Auricchio, Annalinda De Rosa, Davide Fassi, Vanessa Monna, Paola Russo, Birgir Jóhannsson, Josie King, Astrid Lelarge, Pall Líndal, and Frank van Hasselt, published by Birkhäuser, 2025. The book is an output of the research project “Human Cities/Smoties - Creative works with small and remote places” (2020/24), funded by the Creative Europe program. Fifteen tools, organized into six toolkits, designed to guide project leaders in transforming remote areas into more livable spaces by engaging residents and stakeholders in developing cultural and creative activities. These toolkits support creative teams of citizens, public and private institutions, and local governments in co-creating initiatives that enhance the well-being of small and remote communities. This volume was produced within the framework of the Dipartimenti di Eccellenza initiative, for which the Department was selected by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) with the project "Design for Systemic Change". How is UX in Italy and where are we going? Tell us about it: from jobs to salaries, from geography to clients The national UX survey was launched to understand how the discipline and professions are changing in a deeply evolving market and context and what new trajectories the future holds. The design community is now questioning itself on several fronts: 🔹Is UX just a cover for ineffective business models? 🔹Have we really reached the peak of UX with the completion of digital transformation? 🔹 What will be the future of UX or how will it reach a new maturity? 🔹 What impact will AI have on the future of the profession? With a critical and searching spirit, this collaborative initiative will try to understand: 🔹What is the real situation in Italy? 🔹How do UX designers, service designers, product designers and other roles that deal with user experience actually work on a daily basis? 🔹What are the current challenges and opportunities? 🔹Help us build a shared reflection! "Remote Places, Public Spaces. The story of creative works with ten small communities" edited by Davide Fassi, Annalinda De Rosa, ELLER Inge, and michael dumiak, published by Birkhäuser, 2024. The book brings together inspiring stories of how design can support small communities in regenerating public spaces in areas that suffer from “relational remoteness”. Filled with insights from ten European remote communities and the researchers’ final scientific reflections, it is a testament to the power of collaboration and the creative spirit in fostering vibrant public spaces through social innovation and participatory design. The book is an output of the research project “Human Cities/Smoties - Creative works with small and remote places” (2020/24), funded by the Creative Europe program. “Design Philology Essays. Issue Zero. Design at Politecnico di Milano: The Beginning of a Story” edited by Paola Bertola, Giampiero Bosoni and Agnese Rebaglio (Department of Design, Politecnico di Milano), published by FrancoAngeli. In October 1993, the first Bachelor’s Degree Program in Industrial Design in Italy was inaugurated at Politecnico di Milano. Since then, a thirty-year journey has marked the growth of this discipline across numerous universities in Italy and the recognition of design as a fundamental feature of Italian culture. This volume – Issue Zero – launches a publishing initiative that, grounded in a reflection on the historical memory and cultural roots of Politecnico di Milano’s Design System, aims to sustain the distinctive forward-looking spirit of Polytechnic design culture. Its goal is to place design at the service of today’s cultural, social, technological, and environmental challenges. The first section explores the opportunities presented by the "digital humanities" to enhance the history of design at the Politecnico di Milano, along with its traces and testimonies, realized in Design Philology and launched in 2023. The second section provides an initial collection of historical-critical reconstructions of the events that led to the establishment of a Design System at Politecnico di Milano. The volume was produced within the framework of the Dipartimenti di Eccellenza initiative, for which the Department was selected by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) with "Design for Systemic Change", a project that addresses the complex challenges of ecological and digital transitions through an integrated and experimental design approach, with the aim of developing circular and sustainable solutions.
