The 33rd General Assembly of WAREG marked an important moment for the association with the election of a new Board, which will serve until 2026. The new Board is formed by: 💧 The President, Vera Eiró, Chairman of ERSAR (Water and Waste Services Regulation Authority) (Portugal). 💧 The Permanent Vice President Andrea Guerrini, Board Member of ARERA - Autorità di Regolazione per Energia Reti e Ambiente, (Italy). 💧 The Vice President Pal Sagvari, Vice-President of Magyar Energetikai és Közmű-szabályozási Hivatal, (Hungary). 💧 The Vice President Ivaylo Kastchiev, PhD, MBA, Director at Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (Bulgaria). 💧 The Vice President Konstantinos Tsimaras, Board Member at Regulatory Authority for Energy, Waste and Water (Greece). This Board reflects WAREG’s commitment to collaboration and inclusive governance, ensuring strong leadership in addressing the challenges and opportunities within the water sector. On November 21 and 22 2024, in collaboration with ERSAR (Water and Waste Services Regulation Authority), we organized the latest workshop under the European Commission’s TAIEX program, with representatives from #Albania, #Kosovo, #Montenegro, #NorthMacedonia, #Bosnia-and-Herzegovina, #Moldova, #Serbia, and #Ukraine. The workshop began with a presentation on the #EUWaterDirective, covering water monitoring procedures, followed by a case study presentation on #Portugal. Specifically, the session focused on the role of regulators in overseeing efficiency and investments, developing #KeyPerformanceIndicators, monitoring these indicators, and addressing the challenges posed by EU regulations. Another key topic discussed was #EnergyNeutrality in water systems. Experts explored how this can be achieved as part of the broader goal of #climate-neutrality by reducing energy consumption. A special focus was placed on #Customer Interaction Indicators, where discussions covered contractual services, minimum service standards, and the #ServiceQualityRegulation. #TAIEX is the European Commission's Technical Assistance and Information Exchange instrument, which provides expertise through seminars and study visits to address water-related issues, aimed at aligning with and implementing EU legislation. On the second day a side visit to the Water Treatment Facility of Vale da Pedra, Azambuja, was held focused in the experience of Water supply system integration in EPAL, water abstraction and treatment technologies.

On June 25th, experts from Jordan and Europe gathered to address the critical issue of regulating water runoff diffuse pollution. Key highlights of the event include: - Dr. -Ing. Ganbaatar Kh. from Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) sharing insights on urban water runoff. - Ahmad S. Bali presenting Jordan's initiatives in urban water management, including rainwater harvesting from rooftops as an innovative solution. - WAREG - European Water Regulators representatives Christian Minelli and Ramon Domènech Aldomà discussing WAREG and the new EU Wastewater Directive. - Luz P. Herrero Castilla from AIMEN Centro Tecnológico highlighting how WATERUN helps prevent and mitigate urban runoff pollution. - Khaldoun Shatanawi, Director of the Water, Energy, and Environment Center at the University of Jordan, presenting the WATERUN Initiative in Jordan. On June 19th, WAREG’s members convened for our 32nd General Assembly in Skopje, hosted by the ENERGY, WATER SERVICES AND WASTE MANAGEMENT SERVICES REGULATORY COMMISSION OF THE REPUBLIC OF NORTH MACEDONIA. This event marked another significant chapter in a year celebrating over a decade of leadership in water regulation. Highlighting the assembly was also the roundtable discussion ‘2014-2024: 10 Years of WAREG Cooperation,’ where members exchanged views on the evolution of governance and the future priorities for our sector. On April 23rd, WAREG's 31st General Assembly was gathered at European University Institute! This year's assemblies mark 10 years of WAREG's work in #water regulation. The Assembly featured a comprehensive presentation by the Florence School of Regulation on the progress toward #climateneutrality within the water sector. Followed by an engaging discussion on the European Commission's Technical Support Instrument, alongside an open forum where Members discussed on investment needs in the water sector and shared their ideas and insights about the future direction of #WAREG. As we celebrate WAREG's 10th anniversary, we're reflecting on our journey and the impact we've made in shaping water regulation across #Europe.
