Meet the remarkable young individuals driving the European Youth Debate! On May 2nd, I had the privilege of serving as a keynote speaker at the Energy (R)Evolution debate, organized by the European Generation in collaboration with Regione Lombardia and other supporting organizations. We are on the brink of a polycrisis - a cluster of related global risks with compounding effects. The #polycrisis affects also the #energy sector, with an increasingly adversarial approach in green industrial policies and #deglobalization spins. As Patrick Clerens aptly stated at the EASE - The European Association for Storage of Energy Summit last year, storage stands as the unsung hero of decarbonization during times of #energyinsecurity. My work as a Principal Investigator at RE-DESIGN (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions) has revealed that the EU energy storage target requires a overhaul of current policy and public funding frameworks across three packages: finance, power markets, and innovation. During my address, I highlighted the current ambiguity surrounding regulatory frameworks for energy storage, essential to achieve energy security by meeting the EU's projected needs energy storage needs - 200GW by 2030 and 600GW by 2050. I underscored how these capacities must be met through diverse actors and technologies, including green hydrogen. It was inspiring to witness the enthusiasm of students for concrete #reform proposals aimed at catalyzing a revolution and evolution at once, embedding energy storage in energy and green industrial policies. The energy transition is yet to be accomplished and the youth's contribution will do nothing less than galvanize it and make it real! With his presentation on “Content Applications and telecommunication networks: regulating the internet ecosystem”, Valerio Usella, MBA was our final “Industry Sneak Peek” guest speaker, pertaining to the roundtable “EU Digital and AI Policy” at Regione Lombardia. On the 2nd of May, at the European Youth Debate 2024, students were exposed to the expertise of Dott. Usella, Senior Regulatory Manager at Open Fiber and freelance power regulation consultant, on the topic of the internet value chain with a focus on the criticalities of the European digital infrastructure. Usella focused on the state of the art of the telecommunications market and the financial stress currently faced by providers, due to the actual structure of the value chain, which is instead more oriented towards content providers (Google, Meta, Microsoft…). He touched upon the various pieces of the network and the different properties of copper and fiber, before addressing the European digital connectivity targets, highlighting the need to invest in infrastructure in order to reach the 100% 5G coverage target set by the EU in 2030. Amidst the EC White Paper and the upcoming Digital Network Act, Usella stressed the importance of a legislative framework comprehensive of clear deadlines and harmonized regulation throughout the EU. On the 2nd of May, in the context of the European Youth Debate 2024, participants had the chance to interact with Professor Michele Governatori during the roundtable work on “European Union Energy (R)evolution” at Regione Lombardia. Drawing on a robust experience as the Energy Programme Lead at the ECCO Think Tank, founder of the Derrick Energia specialised blog, former president of the European Energy Retailers, and ex-Head of Public and Regulatory Affairs at Axpo Italia, our "Industry Sneak Peek" expert Michele Governatori has provided participants with an in-depth overview of the intricacies that underpin energy markets. Complemented by his strong academic background in microeconomics, climate change policy and beyond, the lecture delivered by Professor Governatori equipped our student attendees with the fundamental technical knowledge in the field of energy infrastructure, from heat pumps and oil derricks to nuclear power plants and the innovative gravity-based energy storage. Lastly, his expert stances on C02 emission abatement via carbon permits trading, energy trade, and electricity grids proved instrumental in the policy drafting process led by our beloved EYDsters. His insightful remarks on the European Union AI Act and Italy’s Artificial Intelligence Strategy shed light on crucial regulatory concerns and possible solutions within the EU. Representing one of our partners, Open Gate Italia, a consultancy agency in the telecommunications sector, Amadei made use of his expertise by revealing to the students the complexities surrounding the application of generative AI, emphasizing the EU priority of guaranteeing privacy and safety. Exciting News from the European Youth Debate 2024! 🌍 On the 2nd of May, students and guests gathered at Palazzo Lombardia for the opening ceremony of the European Youth Debate. We extend our gratitude to Regione Lombardia for providing our venue and their support. It was an honor for us to host our event in Auditorium Testori. During the Opening Ceremony, we heard from experts who provided insights into EU affairs and the four topics chosen for this edition of the EYD: We hosted Catherine E. de Vries and Carlo Altomonte, that shed light on the upcoming EU Parliamentary elections. Stefano da Empoli, President of I-Com Institute for Competition and Think-tank on Digital Innovation, provided invaluable insights into European AI and Digital Policy. His focus on "Real risks and false fears" generated by AI applications, especially in the job market, emphasized the urgent need to foster investments and research within the EU. Alexander Borum, Policy Leader Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence, articulated the necessity for a unified response to threats facing the EU, referencing recent disruptions in the Red Sea's supply chain. He stressed the need to simplify the EU decision-making process and strategic planning in defense systems amidst global unrest and the Russia-Ukraine war at Europe’s doorstep. Emanuel Garavello, independent consultant specialized in human rights and migration, delved into Human Rights Protection, focusing on the management of the immigration flows towards and from the EU. Garavello highlighted the flaws in the EU current migration management system and pointed out possible solutions, especially given the recent influx of refugees generated by the war in Ukraine. Esmeralda Colombo, with her experience as Policy and Public Funding Manager at Smartenergy Italy Srl., researcher at the European Institute on Economics and the Environment, and an entrepreneur, delved into the European Energy (R)evolution. Her intervention stressed the need to integrate financial instruments to push forward the green transition. She illustrated the functioning of green bonds and green banks and the need to expand our efforts to really bring about a European Energy (R)evolution. We express our gratitude to Lorenza Demicheli and Iorgus Serghei Cicala, the Managing Directors of the EYD 2024, and to Valentina Benedetta Benzi and Filippo Bulath, the Heads of Operations.
