🚀 Excited to announce our latest publication: "An Ethical Framework for Trustworthy Neural Rendering Applied in Cultural Heritage and Creative Industries" in Frontiers in Computer Science.
In this work, we explore the ethical considerations of applying Neural Rendering techniques to cultural heritage and creative industries, proposing a framework to guide stakeholders in responsible implementation.
This framework aims to build NR systems with a trustworthy approach by providing a structured methodology for the analysis of the ethical risks associated with NR in the CCI sector. To define this framework, we followed these steps:
1- Data Gathering: The first step involves collecting creative and cultural industry (CCI) data, such as 3D scans, digital archives, or creative content like images, dance, and fashion designs. This data is used to apply neural rendering (NR) techniques, generating high-quality digital representations of CCI artifacts.
2- NR Methods Analysis: The second step analyzes NR methods and their use cases, focusing on the specific algorithms, their potential applications, and the technical challenges they present, such as accuracy, representation quality, and limitations in different creative domains.
3- Ethical Guidelines Review: In the third step, ethical guidelines from documents such as the AI European Commission’s policies, ALTAI, ICOM’s ethics code, and UNESCO's AI recommendations are reviewed. This helps frame the analysis within a broader ethical context and informs the development of regulations for NR in CCI.
4- Ethical Risks and Solutions: The final step identifies key ethical risks like transparency and responsibility, which are mapped to the principles from the ethical guidelines. Addressing these risks ensures the responsible, fair, and trustworthy application of NR in CCI, supporting sustainability and reliability.
