Ismec Expertise in Naval Propulsion Lines --- --- --- How does the propulsion of a ship is composed? 🚢 As you may know, we have many years of experience in the production and refurbishment of shafts for the naval sector! Our workshop is highly equipped and qualified, having among other tasks produced components for the Eclipse, the superyacht owned by Roman Abramovich. Here's how it is simply composed: 🔹The power is provided by an engine, usually diesel, sometimes electric or hybrid. This is connected via the drive shaft to the intermediate shaft through a clutch. Depending on the length of this shaft, there are a series of bearings that serve as supports for the shaft. At the same time, their purpose is to keep the shaft lubricated with oil to limit friction, facilitating rotation and preventing damage. Here, the bushings come into play, fitted at the most sensitive points and made from materials with specific chemical and physical properties. 🔹Before reaching the exterior part of the hull, the intermediate shaft connects to the sterntube shaft, which passes through the sterntube. This component, thanks to its special mechanism of seal rings, allows the shaft to exit into the water without allowing water to enter the ship. Often incorporated in the section of the propeller shaft, the sterntube shaft is crucial to be constantly lubricated and reinforced by additional bushings. 🔹The external section of the shaft, at whose end the propeller is located, is called the propeller shaft. The rotation imparted to the propeller pushes the water, generating propulsion. However, the power generated risks pushing and damaging the shaft and consequently the engine. For this reason, at the height of the intermediate shaft, the thrust block is installed - a bearing that supports the thrust and transfers it to the hull, allowing navigation. These slots (14 on each side), reaching depths from 140mm up to over 210mm and lengths of nearly 5.000mm, showcase millimeter-level precision.
