The Journal of European Integration publishes scholarly work on all aspects of the European integration process.
Chi siamo
The Journal of European Integration publishes scholarly work on all aspects of the European integration process. We welcome submissions from a variety of disciplinary or multidisciplinary perspectives, ranging from political science and political economy to public administration, law, history, sociology and cultural studies. However, the primary emphasis is on the discussion of European integration in the fields of political science and international relations. We understand European integration broadly, as pan-European process rather than merely the European Union, though the majority of our contributions might be devoted to the latter. We also publish comparative studies of federalism, regional integration and other forms of multilateral cooperation, as well as articles dealing with the European Union’s external relations and its global role, be it concerning economic, diplomatic or security relations. Please note that we cannot accept papers based on mathematical economics or econometrics, and we discourage articles providing descriptive case studies of single countries or regions. The main purpose of the Journal of European Integration is to serve a broad readership which implies that articles should be of a wider relevance rather than a of a highly technical or narrow nature. The emphasis should be on scholarly work and should provide, in particular, analysis rather than description or assertion. Given our readership, authors are encouraged to write in a clear and accessible style. Contributions are published in English - please ensure that, if necessary, your contributions are language-checked before publication. Peer Review All research articles in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymized refereeing by at least two referees.

𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗨 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀: 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗿-𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴? In Journal of European Integration, Eva Michaels, Robert Kissack, and Óscar Fernández examined national parliamentary debates in 13 EU member states of eight CSDP military deployments underway between 2016 and 2021. It reviews discussions about whether, and why, to send troops on EU missions and operations, and the extent to which these debates differ from expectations in the literature derived from involvement in NATO operations: https://lnkd.in/eR3udJKg The survey includes small states, which have been previously excluded from such analysis. Drawing on a dataset of 411 statements by national parliamentarians from across Europe, the article employs eight discursive frames to understand how MPs articulate their acceptance (or not) of CSDP deployments. We supplement this with detailed data on national troop contributions. We find that CSDP debates in national parliaments resemble those of ‘high-salience’ deployments when considering frame usage and party position. We present limited evidence supporting the claim that small states frame deployment debates similarly to large states.

The radical left in Europe has a long tradition of anti-militarism and anti-imperialism. Yet, when a militarist, authoritarian #Russia invaded #Ukraine in 2022 with thinly veiled neo-colonial ambitions, the radical left in Europe was divided over how to respond. While some jettisoned previous positions of accommodating Russia and came out in support of Ukraine diplomatically and militarily, others blamed #NATO and the West more broadly for provoking Russian aggression. I became interested in what exactly divides the radical left and how such dividing lines correspond with being either close to or far away from Russia and with being more or less radically left and/or progressive. My preliminary answer is now out open access in the Journal of European Integration. I used voting data from the #EuropeanParliament (EP) to identify the positions of 39 radical left Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). MEPs vote not only on entire motions but also on single sentences or even single words, if so requested. For example, a motion on the Russian war against Ukraine condemns Russia’s “illegal, unprovoked and unjustified military aggression”. The Left in the European Parliament had asked to have a separate vote on this sentence without the word “unprovoked”. The minutes then record for all voting MEPs whether they voted in favor, against, or abstained. I focused on 3 resolutions, which yielded more than 100 roll call votes. For everyone interested in the details of MEPs positions, this is a great source! In addition, I talked to radical left MEPs from Cyprus, Spain and Germany to double-check whether my interpretations were correct. My main finding is that support for #sanctions and military aid to Ukraine comes more natural to parties that stand for ‘new politics’ issues such as minority rights and feminism and whose values are thus at a maximum distance from Putin’s authoritarian and traditionalist vision of Russia. Geographical distance to Russia plays only a small role. I really enjoyed working on this article, which included reading about the historical traditions of the radical left, digging up and analysing votes, and talking to MEPs and their staff. Along the way, I received valuable comments from anonymous reviewers as well as from E. Bastiaan Van Apeldoorn, Daphné Charotte, Angelos Chryssogelos, Hylke Dijkstra, Tamas Dudlak, Y. I am thrilled to share my first, single-authored article - now out in the Journal of European Integration! 📊 Building on the work of my PhD dissertation, I show the extent to which EU cross-border regions are (economically, socially, politically) integrated and what explains their degree of integration. 🔗 Open Access, courtesy of the University of Lausanne - UNIL: https://lnkd.in/dwpdrfcW Swiss National Science Foundation SNSF | IEP UNIL - Institut d'études politiques

👉 https://bit.ly/4fzT0Er
