Celebrating the essence of ceramics in a dialogue with the world’s best designers.

Chi siamo

Mutina originates from a dual insight. On the one hand, the need to elevate the essence of ceramics through surfaces characterized by a strong tactility. On the other hand, the challenge of involving significant names in contemporary design and inviting them to engage with ceramic materials. The combination of these aspects gives rise to a perfect dialogue, leading the brand in 2005 to embark on an unprecedented journey to challenge the conventions of ceramics not only in terms of scale, texture, and composition but also in terms of creativity and experimentation. Mutina is an author’s project developed alongside an excellent team, including Michael Anastassiades, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Nathalie Du Pasquier, Konstantin Grcic, Hella Jongerius, Laboratorio Avallone, OEO Studio, Raw Edges, Inga Sempé, Patricia Urquiola, Vincent Van Duysen, and Tokujin Yoshioka. Sensitivity to form, desire for innovation, and openness to contamination have been integral to Mutina since its inception. In 2017, these principles materialized in the Mutina for Art initiative, a non-profit endeavour reflecting the company’s commitment to structured and articulated engagement with contemporary art. The aim is to make art a source of inspiration, experience, and, above all, a territory for exchange.

Mutina took part in Homo Faber under the artistic direction of Luca Guadagnino and Nicolò Rosmarini. The event took place between September 1 and 30, at Fondazione Giorgio Cini, in Venice. For the occasion, the headquarters’ café “La Cicchetteria” was restyled thanks to the iconic Mater collection designed by Patricia Urquiola and several modules of Bloc by Bouroullec. The project is dedicated to the Second Life of the Centro Marinaro, the school designed in 1952 by Luigi Vietti, Italian rationalist architect. A measured architecture, sometimes mimetic, that seeks a blend with the surrounding landscape: to use the words that Vietti himself will use for the Green Theatre, it is “an affectionate thing, not imposing”. The story of Mutina is one born from dialogue. “A Dialogue on Ceramics” is the new video format exploring the creative synergies that have made Mutina what it is today, through conversations between designers, intellectuals and friends. This act features Nathalie Du Pasquier and Jean-Pierre Blanc on the occasion of the 18th Hyères Design Parade at Villa Noailles, in which the artist presented a unique selection of her work. “There is light in ceramics. I think it is a combination of elements that makes ceramics so magical. Look at this object Nathalie called ‘table architecture’: it transports us elsewhere. I think it is the strength of the artist and the power of design—especially when combined with ceramics.” (Jean-Pierre Blanc) Watch the full interview and discover more about the exhibition.

The new Editions designed by Ronan Bouroullec are entirely inspired by rustic and natural imagery. Talea is a vase with organic shapes, similar to buds ready to sprout. Camino and Camini evoke familiar contexts and combine a ceramic structure with anodised aluminium containers. Finestra Giorno and Finestra Notte stand in the space like gateways to imagined worlds. Lastly, Candeliere is a lighting support that can create a wide range of combinations by defining balances across the table. Discover more about the collection at https://lnkd.in/d3TQJW6W Photography by Gerhardt Kellermann

Adagio is a new collection designed by Ronan Bouroullec that take its name to musical tempos and the slowness of the gesture: indeed, it requires applying one piece at a time, following a sophisticated interlocking game. “Adagio is the photograph of a gesture. A texture resembles a ceramics fabric—an unexpected resonance between diverse subjects.” Discover more about the collection at https://lnkd.in/d4Pk9Kgk Photography by Gerhardt Kellermann

Osso & Bottone is a new collection designed by Ronan Bouroullec that takes its name from the shapes evoked by the slightly contoured configuration of the pieces that make up the collection. The result is a kind of optical vibration capable of blurring the original configurations and opening a dialogue between the collection and the natural world it faces. “In creating Osso shape, I thought about how ceramics interact with the surrounding environment. I wanted something that could irregularly merge with nature, almost vibrating with it.” Discover more about the collection at https://lnkd.in/dvDg7Dk5 Photography by Gerhardt Kellermann
