How do we balance the future of energy? The energy transition isn’t just about adding more renewables. It’s about creating systems that can adapt and balance. This week on the Energ' Ethic Podcast, I spoke with Olivia S., Head of Innovation at Sympower, to explore how flexibility aggregation makes that possible. Olivia explained it perfectly: "We’re like a spider on the web, connecting energy assets—like greenhouses and electric boilers—and using their flexibility to keep the grid stable." Here’s why this matters:  - Electricity must be consumed the moment it’s produced.  - Renewables like wind and solar don’t follow a schedule.  - Flexibility ensures balance by adjusting energy *use* when needed. Without it, a fully renewable energy system simply isn’t possible. Sympower’s story is inspiring:  - They’ve grown from a 10-person startup to a company balancing the grid across Europe.  - They’re proving that industries can save money *and* support the energy transition. But challenges remain—regulations, education, and scaling innovation take time. For me, this conversation reinforced a crucial point: The energy transition is about more than technology. It’s about people, systems, and creating real-world solutions that work for everyone. 🎧 Want to know how we can balance the grid—and the future? 👉 https://lnkd.in/d7-N6j74) Let’s keep on 2025 with action. How do you see flexibility shaping the future of energy?

It’s no secret, but it’s not always obvious either: when you use electricity directly impacts emissions and costs. If you follow me, you certainly know that clean electricity is often cheaper and produces less CO₂. But out of our bubble, most people don’t know (or care) when their grid is clean, or how much they could save by shifting their usage. Julien Lavalley at Electricity Maps breaks it down in FORESIGHT Climate & Energy: - A windy day in Germany? Renewable electricity can jump from 30% to 80% in hours.  - Charging your EV in Poland vs. Sweden? ⚫ or 🟢 - Smart appliances? They could help shift your usage to cleaner times, but they aren’t accessible to everyone yet. I also see the other side: not all households can adjust. Fixed schedules, limited resources, or older appliances still make flexibility a privilege, not a given. That’s why I believe flexible demand must go hand-in-hand with fair energy tariffs:   - Tariffs need to work for families who can’t afford fancy devices - Bills should make it clear when electricity is cheaper and cleaner - Subsidies for smart tools could help everyone participate We’re at a turning point. If we get this right, we can make the energy transition fair, effective, and actually a no-brainer for everyone. But if we don’t, the benefits of clean energy will remain out of reach for too many. And I don't want this to happen. Let’s stop asking people to "figure it out" alone. Let’s build systems that make clean energy the easy, obvious choice, for everyone. As Olivia S. from Sympower says it in the upcoming Energ' Ethic Podcast, “It’s a mind change. When customers finally understand, it clicks.” 📖 Read Julien’s insights: https://lnkd.in/dHRicAYK And my blog for #EUSEW2025: "How to turn electricity bills into tools for climate action and social justice" https://lnkd.in/dQhQ26mb So, Flex for All, then? #EnergyTransition #FairTariffs #FlexibleDemand

Balancing the future of energy doesn’t always mean building something new. Sometimes, it’s about rethinking what we already have. Sympower’s work shows that flexibility—adjusting energy use to balance the grid—can make renewables reliable and help industries save money. But as Olivia S. points out, it’s also about education: “It’s a mind change. When customers finally understand, it clicks.” Watch the reel to hear more, and don’t miss the full Energ' Ethic Podcast episode on Wednesday to see how Sympower is driving this change. 👉 #futureOfEnergy #DemandSideFlexibility smartEn Smart Energy Europe #Aggregation #EnergySystems

When heating a home is a luxury for so many, it’s clear we need change. Last week, Mónica Vidal and I discussed on Energ' Ethic Podcast solutions developed with a coalition of NGOs to tackle this crisis and Build Better Lives. In the meantime, a new JRC article showed how deep the heating challenge is, and how fast we need to accelerate. But change isn’t only driven by climate and social justice campaigners, nor only by policy and regulation. Business-led initiatives are stepping up too. They prove how organic the call for change is. And that's refreshing. This is where the Bring Heat Home campaign comes in. Launched by Euroheat & Power, the campaign aims to:  - Decarbonise heating and cooling, which accounts for over half of the EU’s energy demand.  - Promote district energy systems, heat pumps, and energy efficiency.  - Help households lower energy bills while supporting EU climate goals. What makes this campaign so powerful? It brings together policymakers, energy businesses, and civil society to focus on something that really matters: making heating affordable and sustainable. With support from several MEPs, it’s tackling big issues: cutting emissions, strengthening energy security, and helping families save on their bills. I'd really like to thank Aurélie Beauvais and her team for pushing it. Talking to her in November, it was impossible to miss how proud she was of this campaign. And it’s well-deserved. I need good vibes. That's why I'm looking forward to EUSEW 2025. The world has been feeling so heavy. But of course, we can’t afford to stand still, and we must focus on where we can make an impact. For me, the best way is to meet with inspiring leaders, listen, and share: share ideas, share solutions, share hope. Share good energy. The European Sustainable Energy Week (#EUSEW) is back this June (10–12). It will be the perfect place to do just that. 💡 This year’s focus areas: - Competitiveness and investments in clean energy - Energy affordability - Renewable energy - Energy efficiency - Decarbonisation in the EU and beyond 📢 And the good news is: if you have an idea, you can host a session! Applications are open until 23rd January 2025. 👉 Apply here: interactive.eusew.eu Having been a moderator and speaker at past editions, I know how much impact these conversations can have. If you’re unsure about shaping your idea into a great session, I’m here to help. Let’s make your voice heard! EUSEW is truly a space where good practices and great ideas can spark the change we desperately need. 18.5% of EU households can't keep their homes warm. This spike reverses a decade of progress and highlights a growing crisis where housing and energy poverty collide. 📊 The numbers are alarming: - 51.3%: Increase in EU house prices since 2015.  - 54%: Rise in energy poverty indicators since 2021.  - Low-income households spend more than 40% of their income on housing, often in homes that leak energy. Meanwhile, 3/4 of the EU buildings are inefficient. This isn’t just poverty. This isn't an energy crisis. It’s a RESILIENCE crisis. In my latest podcast episode, I spoke with Mónica Vidal, leader of CAN Europe’s Build Better Lives campaign, about real solutions:  - Retrofitting inefficient homes to lower bills and emissions.  - Turning vacant spaces into affordable housing.  - Protecting tenants from "green gentrification" through balanced policies. The report highlights similar priorities, including:  - Energy-efficient social housing retrofits.  - Rent subsidies tied to energy upgrades. - Taxing speculative housing investments to fund climate-friendly projects. Housing - especially good housing - is at the heart of the energy transition. The clock is ticking. 📖 Read the report: https://lnkd.in/dgYVGcnz 🎧 Hear Monica’s insights: https://lnkd.in/d6H6FM-x Congratulations to Giorgos Koukoufikis and Erhan Özdemir, PhD, the report’s authors, for driving this critical conversation forward. How we live makes a difference in the climate fight. Buildings in Europe account for 40% of energy consumption, and 75% of them are inefficient. It’s bad for people and the planet. Over 42 million Europeans are living in energy poverty, struggling to keep their homes warm or cool enough to live in. But in 2025, let's change that. I spoke with Mónica Vidal, who leads Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe’s Build Better Lives campaign, about how to create homes that are affordable, efficient, and better for the planet. Here are the key takeaways: - Renovation is the future. And the future is now We can’t keep building new homes. Fixing the ones we have is smarter and more sustainable. - Collaboration is key. Monica has united 92 organisations across housing, energy, and social justice to push for change. - Affordable solutions are vital. Efficient homes and appliances shouldn’t be a luxury—everyone deserves access. Monica’s passion for action is contagious. She knows tackling the climate and housing crises means creating homes that are warm, affordable, and efficient for everyone. I couldn't think of a better person to start 2025 on the right foot! Listen now to hear how her campaign is changing lives: https://lnkd.in/d6H6FM-x What’s one more thing you think could make homes greener and more affordable? All right 2025, let’s do this. 1. The clock is ticking on climate goals. 2. Everyone’s shouting “industrial competitiveness” like it’s the only game in town. 3. Social fairness? Still hanging out in the background, waiting for a seat at the table. 4. I’m ready to work with you to change that. I don’t have a new job to announce. No big “new year, new me” here. What I do have is the same energy and commitment to work with organisations that want to move the needle on equity, trust, and solutions that actually work for people. (Because we also have a very complicated political environment...) Before the holidays, the International Association for Energy Economics published my paper: Energy Poverty in the EU: Why Do We Care, and How Must We Act? (Hint: It’s because fairness isn’t optional). (Thanks so much, Jean-Michel Glachant!!) Want to know how energy systems can work for everyone?
