Chi siamo

🪴 If #lignocellulosicfibers like flax, bamboo, and jute are so lightweight, sustainable, and strong (which they are), why don't we use them as a reinforcement in all #polymercomposites, replacing all carbon and glass fibers? For three main reasons: 💦 hydrophilicity, 🌦️ variability, and 🤒 thermal instability. 💦 First. Lignocellulosic fibers are #hydrophylic, so not very much liked by the hydrophobic polymer matrices (bad interfaces🙅♀️), and #hygroscopic, which make them absorb a lot of moisture and swell (worse interfaces🙅♀️). 🌦️ Second. Lignocellulosic fibers are #variable batch-to-batch, because their properties depend on the growing conditions (location, temperature, preciptations). Moreover, their cross section often has a #complexgeometry and it is difficult to measure their mechanical properties reliably. 🤒 Third. Lignocellulosic fibers #thermally #degrade above 200 °C, which makes it challenging to combine them with high performance thermoplastics. How can we address these challenges? By surface treatments, standardized measurements protocols, and #reactivethermoplastics, respectively! At the Polymers & Composites Lab - UniTN, we specifically work on the third challenge and are studying how to produce #polyamide6/flax fiber composites through reactive thermoplastic processing and #insitu #polymerization. If you want to know more on lignocellulosic #reinforcements, here's a video where my colleague Andrea Dorigato and I describe the challenges and opportunities of lignocellulosic fibers (our talk starts at 2:12:30). This talk comes from a very interesting event, "#Sustainable materials - #Plastic transition" held at NOI Techpark in Bolzano, Italy. The full event, with many talks and case studies from the industry, is available at https://lnkd.in/d3h5Q2ZN.

👀 Looking for master's and bachelor's students of UniTrento DII for a #thesis project in the field of #naturalfiber-reinforced #thermoplastic composites! 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿 Plant-based fibers are thermally sensitive, and this is a main issue when manufacturing vegetal fibres/thermoplastic composites due to the high melting point of engineering polymers. ❓ So it is even possible to combine natural fibers with #technicalmatrices such as polyamide 6 (#PA6) to produce #highperformance and sustainable composites? ❗ Yes it is, and we are working on it! ❗ 📲 Want to know how and contribute to the project? Come to the Polymers & Composites Lab - UniTN or contact me, here or by email (giulia.fredi@unitn.it). PS: If you reeeeeally want to know how we did it, a hint is in the first comment 😉 #reactiveiskey #thesisproject #compositesscience #naturalfibers
