"What would you tell your 11-year-old self?” Our women in STEM – graduates, apprentices and experts in R&D and Supply – have shared their answers. Their message? Believe in yourself, stay curious and never let doubt hold you back. For young girls, the path to science, technology, engineering and maths isn’t always clear. But with the right support and encouragement, incredible things can be achieved. Parents, teachers and women in R&D roles play a vital part in shaping children’s futures. Encouraging girls to explore roles in STEM from a young age can open doors to incredible opportunities, and we can motivate the next generation to dream big, stay curious and make bold changes happen. Kate Hickingbottom, one of our R&D apprentices, represents our purpose in action. Kate is in her third year as an apprentice at our Science and Innovation Centre, and finds it rewarding to be able to preach about her love of science and talk about her passion for helping inspire young people to pursue their careers in science. As we approach the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, it is a pivotal moment to drive awareness of the lack of women and gender imbalance in many STEM fields. According to UNESCO, less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women. In fields like engineering and computer science, women are significantly underrepresented. In the health fields in particular, we need a stronger representation of women in R&D which will help lead to better health outcomes for women overall. To drive awareness of how we are trying to change this, our Chief Research and Development Officer, Angela Taha Naef, PhD (She/Her), spoke to Glamour about being a woman in STEM, coming up against the “male as default” approach to healthcare and revolutionising how we think about women's pain and closing the “Gender Pain Gap”. Throughout Angela’s journey from PhD graduate to a member of our Global Executive Committee, she has advocated for women to be part of these important conversations. Angela leads a diverse global R&D team from researchers in laboratories to medical and regulatory and safety professionals, who are all working to innovate and deliver superior health and hygiene products.
