The Regenerative Technologies Lab is part of the BioRobotics Institute of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna. Our research activities focus on the development of technologies for regenerative medicine and artificial organs. We have a strongly interdisciplinary approach and we pursue cross-fertilization between mechatronics, materials science, molecular biology and nanotechnologies, targeting innovative therapeutic solutions to improve patients' quality of life.

I am thrilled to announce that I have graduated with honors (110/110 cum laude) in Bionics Engineering, specializing in Biorobotics, from Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna and Università di Pisa . This milestone marks the result of years of hard work, challenges, and personal growth. My thesis research, titled "Assessment of Mechanical Property Variability of Mesenchymal Stem Cells with Atomic Force Microscopy," has been exciting and rewarding. I am deeply grateful to the Regenerative Technologies Lab at the Biorobotics Institute, where I conducted my thesis research under the supervision of Prof. Leonardo Ricotti and co-supervision of Juliana Redondo, PhD and Alessia Bacci . I also extend my heartfelt thanks to the department of physics of Università degli Studi di Genova, where I completed part of my thesis under the supervision of Prof. Claudio Canale and the co-supervision of Andrea Logomarsino. This achievement is not just about hard work; it’s also thanks to the incredible support and encouragement I got from my mentors, peers, and institutions. A special thank you goes to my mum, who has always believed in me and been my biggest supporter. As I close 2024, I am filled with gratitude for a year that has been transformative in so many ways. From engaging in STEM outreach programs in schools, speaking at conferences to inspire the next generation of scientists, to serving as a STEM ambassador for Samsung Electronics Italia. I look forward to the future, where I hope to contribute to innovation through scientific research and continue to inspire the next generation, especially young girls, to believe in their potential and pursue their goals relentlessly.

🔊 Our latest research at #ISTU2024 Sofia Sirolli presented her work at the 23rd annual symposium of the International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound in #Taipei! ➡️ MIO-PRO2 is a INAIL-funded research project focused on a new human-machine interface for prosthesis control. 🎯 The project merges prosthetics and tissue engineering, with the aim to implant 3D muscle constructs to amputees, enabling a new paradigm for prosthesis control. 🔎 The project will investigate various additive manufacturing technologies combined with multiphysical stimulation for the fabrication and engineering of muscle constructs with contractile capabilities, ensuring high integration in terms of vascularization and innervation with the host tissue. ➡️ WOUND is a INAIL-funded research project focused on innovative patches and ultrasonic/electromagnetic stimulation systems. The aim is to accelerate the healing process of cutaneous chronic ulcers. 🎯 We will investigate an innovative combination of stimuli based on low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF), and bioactive patches. 🧫LIPUS and PEMF will be applied both directly to cells, promoting therapeutic effects, and indirectly — by exploiting the interaction with the patch — to modulate drug release kinetics or trigger other beneficial effects.
