During the Systemic Cycles adventure in the Venice lagoon bioregion, we visited rehub, a Murano-based startup that transforms non-recyclable glass waste into unique design products 🥃 We were warmly welcomed by founder Matteo Silverio, a Venice-based architect, designer, artist, entrepreneur and researcher. With rehub he merges tradition and handcraft with innovation and design 🧑🔬 In Murano glass factories produce over 1,000 tons of non-recyclable glass waste a year, with sometimes 50% of all glass going to waste because of high-quality standards 🗑️ Murano's numbers only reflect a global issue: Europe alone produces 8 million tonnes of non-recyclable glass waste per year 🌍 Through years of research and development, Matteo invented a low-energy process to transform “non-recyclable” glass into a glass paste that can be used for 3D printing 🖨️ 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲. With this unique method he wants to transform millions of tons of waste into beautiful products, while promoting a complementary recycling chain process of all the glass waste that does not meet the standard ♾️ The question remains how we might prevent glass waste from happening all together, while reducing our insatiable desire for consumption 🤔 One key weaving lesson from Matteo: Patience. Building trust takes time. It took years to develop deep and meaningful relationships with the glass manufacturers in Murano. Enhance - Design for Social Impact, an exhibition by DesignWanted Unveiling Projects: Ghebi by rehub.glass Rehub has developed a new process to transform glass waste into a paste that can be shaped at room temperature using a wide range of techniques, including the most common industrial processes. The objects obtained through this process aspire to symbolize a new approach to consumption, as are crafted from secondary raw materials and require 70% less energy than typically needed for glass production.
