SISSA Medialab is a company owned by SISSA - International School for Advanced Studies. It started its activities with the Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP), the first electronic journal specialized in the field, and now produces and runs the series of journals that includes, in addition to JHEP, JCAP, JSTAT, JINST, PoS, JCOM, and JCOM América Latina. SISSA Medialab organizes events and educational programmes, produces innovative media to communicate science to different audiences, offers consultancy for the development of permanent and temporary exhibitions. It has collaborated with several universities and research centres, institutions and networks. SISSA Medialab has designed and implemented several exhibitions and provided scientific consultancy for the creation of science museums and science centers. Since 2005 SISSA Medialab has organized training courses for the explainers of science museums, the science teachers, the scientists and researchers. Organized in several European countries, but also in the Americas and Asia, these courses have involved a total of thousands of participants.

The latest episode of #SciCommConversations – and the last for the year – is out! 🎧 Viktoria Cologna and Niels G. Mede were interviewed by Achintya Rao about their work on the #TISP project, a 68-country endeavour to understand public perceptions of science across the globe. On the podcast, they discussed their recent paper looking into trust in scientists: https://lnkd.in/eEHsqeCr You can listen to the episode below, with a full transcript, or subscribe to “SciComm Conversations” on your favourite podcast player (now also available on Apple Podcasts). #SciComm #ScienceCommunication European Research Executive Agency (REA) https://lnkd.in/eT8_VgUN

🎉 Neuroscience at school! 🧠✨ Today marked the end of a special journey for the students of class 3^F at I.C. Dante Alighieri in Trieste! Over the past few months, they have worked side by side with researcher Caterina Ciani, PhD in molecular biology and researcher at SISSA, and their science teacher Luisa Feliziani, exploring the fascinating world of the brain and contemporary research in #neuroscience. But they didn't stop there! Divided into groups, the students created scientific posters to explore some of the topics in depth, using English: the language of science and research, which they have learnt to use following the science course in English since sixth grade. Today, these works were the main focus of a #postersession open to the public, which was extraordinarily well attended. 🌟 During the session, the public was able to vote for the most significant poster: many interesting prizes were up for grabs, as each contribution was unique and valuable. Thanks to all participants. Congratulations to the students for their commitment, creativity and enthusiasm! 👏 The course was funded by the Dana Foundation on the occasion of Brain Awareness Week 2024 and realised with the collaboration of SISSA Medialab and the SISSA for Schools programme. #BrainAwarenessWeek #ScienceForAll

🌌 A journey to the origins of water A conference with Marco Fulle (Astronomical Observatory of Trieste INAF - Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica), who guided us to the discovery of the mystery of water in our solar system, has just ended. Comets, considered for years to be the bearers of water, were the starting point of an extraordinary journey: from primordial gas and dust disks to the most recent discoveries by cutting-edge telescopes and daring space missions. A tale that blended science, curiosity and imagination, reminding us how fundamental water is to our life and to understanding the very origin of the Earth. Thanks to all participants! We look forward to seeing you at the last event of the series "Da Miramare al Cosmo" scheduled for Wednesday 22 January 2025 at 3 p.m. More info at https://lnkd.in/es_K7r_t

🌌 Putting the Anthropic Principle to the Test 🌌 Can the universe’s “just-right” conditions for life be scientifically tested? A groundbreaking study by Nemanja Kaloper and Alexander Westphal in JCAP proposes an experimental framework to challenge the anthropic principle. Their approach ties the validity of the principle to three key conditions: 1️⃣ Evidence for cosmic inflation, 2️⃣ Existence of ultralight axions, and 3️⃣ Dark matter not being made of axions. If all three hold true, the anthropic principle would be invalidated, questioning the improbability of our universe’s life-supporting conditions. This research bridges cosmology, particle physics, and philosophy, marking the first case where the anthropic principle could fail a scientific test. Observations from upcoming missions like LiteBIRD and studies of black holes may soon provide answers. 🚀 https://lnkd.in/dkYqGCab

COALESCE Hubs generate ideas to strengthen science communication in times of crisis “Finding ways to communicate science more effectively when a crisis is causing havoc is one of the biggest challenges facing science communication – something the COVID-19 pandemic brought into sharp focus. Polarisation, disinformation and the blurring of boundaries around who has relevant expertise all combine to make dealing with a crisis more challenging.” Article by Dr Andy Ridgway, graphic by Edgar Sanjuán.
