The STARLighT study builds on the hypothesis that implementing a structured lifestyle intervention, composed of physical exercise and nutrition, together with systemic neoadjuvant/adjuvant treatment, would significantly improve clinical outcomes in patients with early-stage lung cancer, reduce the socio-economic burden caused by this disease, and substantially improve patients' quality of life.

What is the rationale behind the #STARLighT study 🎇 ? 💡 Recently, our #research #group has published a dedicated #commentary (https://lnkd.in/dapK5bdk) supporting the #mechanisms by which #physical #exercise 🚴♀️ might improve the response to #neoadjuvant treatment 💊 in patients with lung cancer!!!! 📌 Indeed #Exercise may increase the overall rate of #pathological #complete #response 🔬 and #major #pathological #response, since #observational and #preclinical studies showed that exercise is able to reduce #tumor #progression and enhance the #efficacy of cancer treatments, particularly #immunotherapy!!! 📢 One of the goals of the #STARLighT trial is to evaluate these speculations through an #interventional #study on patients undergoing neoadjuvant treatments!!!! The #Starlight🎇 #study has just enrolled its #first #patient!!! As a first step, the project aims to explore the #attitude, #preferences, #needs, and #barriers of patients affected by early-stage #lungcancer towards the use of #technology 📱🖥️ for #physicalexercise 🏃♀️🏋️♂️ and #nutrition 🍆🍞 interventions. This is essential in light of developing a #patient-center 🧑💻platform with the final aim of favoring the compliance of the #lifestyle intervention. #Starlight 🎇 study has officially started!!! The study will test the impact of a structured #lifestyle intervention 🏋♀️ 🥖 on oncological outcomes in patients affected by early-stage #lung cancer! The #first #step 💡 of the project foresees the building of the #telehealth 📱 platform to support the delivery of lifestyle intervention!! The aim is to build: 1) a #user interface 💻 informing the participants about their tailored lifestyle program and 2) a #remote #research #staff control platform 👩⚕️ through which #skilled #experts may manage and adapt the program based on specific patients’ profiles!!! Stay tuned for updates!!! Sara Pilotto Alice Avancini Ilaria Trestini Lorenzo Belluomini Anita Borsati Christian Ciurnelli Linda toniolo Michele Milella Paolo Fiorini Marco Sposito Jessica Insolda

📣📣📣 Very proud to announce that the #STARLighT study, P.I. Prof. Sara Pilotto, has received funding from Fondazione AIRC per la Ricerca sul Cancro ETS (AIRC Next Gen Clinician Scientist). #STARLighT study will be the first trial that will test the impact of a lifestyle intervention on clinical outcomes in lung cancer ‼‼‼ 📍 #STARLighT study builds on the idea💡that in #lungcancer, a relatively stable and non-modifiable #genomic landscape dictates patients’ hashtag #clinical #outcomes (prognostically, as well as in response to current treatments) by inducing specific changes in the #molecular #profile(s) of the tumor itself and of the micro- and macro- host environment (#transcriptome🔬); such intermediate/ effector profiles are indeed potentially modifiable and integrate signals deriving from the #tumor, the #host, and the #externalenvironment (e.g. cancer therapy). 📌 In this regard, we hypothesize that, depending on the tumor's genomic background, a tailored #physicalexercise 🚴♀️🏋♀️ and #nutrition 🍎🍗 intervention could #modify circulating #immuno-inflammatory profiles and intermediate/effectors, thereby steering them toward a more favorable #clinicaloutcome ⚖ in early-stage lung cancer. To achieve this goal, the #STARLighT study will perform #two different studies based on the treatment status, i.e., during #neoadjuvant or adjuvant treatments, to verify the interactions just hypothesize and thus the impact of lifestyle intervention on #lungcanceroutcomes. Stay tuned for updates!!!!!

📣📣📣 #Physical #exercise 🚴♀️ might improve the #response to #neoadjuvant treatment 💊 in patients affected by #lung #cancer!!!!! A new era is approaching for lung cancer treatment: ⬆ lung cancer #screening and consequently a wider role for #neoadjuvant #treatment, and in particular of #chemoimmunotherapy. In this #commentary 📜(https://lnkd.in/d8f2JwkR) published on #clinical #lung #cancer, we speculate 💭 about the impact of physical exercise in the neoadjuvant setting, taking as a reference the results of the #Checkmate816 study. 1️⃣ #Exercise may increase the percentage of #pathological complete response (24%) 🔬 and #major pathological response (36.9%) achieved in CheckMate 816 ‼ #observational and #preclinical studies showed that exercise is able to reduce tumor progression and enhance the efficacy of cancer treatments, particularly #immunotherapy. 2️⃣ #Exercise may counteract the main #side #effects of neoadjuvant #chemoimmunotherapy, such as #neutropenia ⚠ , #nausea🤢, #anemia and #immune-related adverse events 3️⃣ #Exercise may increase #surgical #eligibility ✂ by slowing tumor progression, reducing treatment side effects, and optimizing #lung and #cardiorespiratory #fitness💥 4️⃣ #Exercise may reduce #postoperative #complications💡 and the #length of #hospital #stay 🛏, as reported by several reviews and meta-analysis. 5️⃣ #Exercise may increase the proportion of patients 👥 candidates for #adjuvant treatment and/or avoid potential #delays, through the improvements in the postoperative outcomes❗❗ 6️⃣ Given all the just mentioned potential impacts, it is plausible to hypothesize that #physical #exercise performed during neoadjuvant treatments may also produce #long-term 📊 benefits, such as enhancements in #event-free #survival 📈 This is the first step of our amazing research group!!! We will soon move from #hypotheses to #practice!!!! stay tuned for news of our #new and #exciting research project!!! just a hint....#Starlight 🎇 Sara Pilotto Lorenzo Belluomini Diana Giannarelli Michele Milella Federico Schena https://lnkd.in/d8f2JwkR
