Two economic crises, a pandemic and the search for new lifestyles have only heightened an urgent need, the desire for nature close at hand. Where we are here, in Milan, but also around the world, there is a growing trend towards urban horticulture. This is what led us to take an interest in the topic. Our primary aim is to identify the best ways to ensure good output even on the balcony of the home. We started as a group of friends, assessing how much we could find on the net about growing vegetables on balconies. After conducting our first unsuccessful experiments we thought that there were a lot of points that could be improved in the materials available. So, we will be trying to understand how to improve our balcony crops in terms of: Sustainability Recycling Practicality Productivity Elegance Commitment Dirt issues To do all this we divided up the tasks and each started with a different vegetable crop, comparing notes from time to time on the results and activities to improve what is currently on the market. We also explored several containers to create our own from recycled materials as a primary purpose. Our goal is to create a sustainable balcony vegetable garden that will be beautiful, efficient and productive. We will start by examining the materials. It’s a complicated challenge, but an exhilarating one!

🌿🌼 Choosing the Right Planter for Your Balcony Garden 🌼🌿 Creating a balcony garden isn’t just about growing fresh veggies—it’s an art that starts with selecting the right tools. The planter you choose plays a crucial role not just in the health of your plants but also in the aesthetics and functionality of your green space. Here’s what to consider: 1. Quality Materials and Recyclability: Opt for planters made from durable, preferably recycled or recyclable materials. Terracotta or recycled plastic not only adds a stylish touch but are also environmentally friendly choices. Ensure they are treated to withstand UV rays and weather conditions for longevity. 2. Seasonal Adaptability: Your planter should adapt to changing seasons. In summer, materials like ceramic can help keep soil cool, while in winter, insulated planters protect roots from the cold. Make sure the planter has adequate drainage to prevent water logging, crucial during rainy falls or snowy winters. 3. Ease of Cleaning: Consider how easy it is to clean the planter. Smooth, non-porous materials like some plastics or glazed ceramics are easier to clean and less likely to harbor pests and mold. 4. Aesthetic Benefits: The right planter can transform a balcony from a bland space to a lush, vibrant haven. Choose colors and finishes that complement your outdoor space and reflect your personal style. 5. Size and Depth: Ensure the planter is deep enough for the roots of the plants you intend to grow: Herbs like basil or parsley thrive in shallower planters, about 15-20 cm deep. Leafy greens such as lettuce require planters at least 20-25 cm deep. Root vegetables like carrots and radishes do well in planters 20-30 cm deep. Larger plants such as tomatoes or peppers benefit from deeper planters, around 30-40 cm. 🌱 Starting a balcony garden is a rewarding activity that can significantly enhance your quality of life. Choosing the right planter is the first step toward a healthy and productive urban garden. What’s your favorite type of planter and why? Share your thoughts and photos with us! 📸💬 #UrbanGardening #BalconyGarden #EcoFriendlyPlanters #GardeningHobby #Jocondo_io #Smartpot #Smartgarden

🌿 Jumpstart Your Terrace Garden This January! 🌱 Ready to freshen up your terrace with some vibrant greenery this winter? January is a great time to start planning your garden, and here are some top crop choices that thrive in cooler weather and can be started early in the year: Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and arugula love the cool weather and can often withstand frost. Start these in small pots or trays to transfer outside as they mature. Herbs: Parsley, cilantro, and chives are hardy herbs that can start on your windowsill and move outside as they grow. They require minimal space and can add fresh flavors to your winter meals. Root Vegetables: Radishes and carrots are excellent choices for deeper containers. They can handle the chill and provide fresh produce early in the season. Peas: Snow peas and snap peas are not only easy to grow but also thrive in cooler temperatures. They’ll need a trellis for support, so plan your space accordingly. Onions and Garlic: January is still a good time to start onions and garlic. These staples take a while to mature but starting them early will give you a head start on a flavorful harvest. 📅 Planning Tips: Make sure your containers have good drainage to prevent waterlogging during winter rains. Cover delicate seedlings with fleece to protect from frost, and maximize sunlight exposure to encourage growth. Ready to green up your terrace? Let’s make this January the start of something fresh and vibrant! 🌱💚 #TerraceGardening #UrbanGardening #WinterCrops #JanuaryPlanting #GardenFresh #Jocondo_io

🌿 Winter Gardening Tips: Preparing Your Balcony for the Cold ❄️ Winter is coming, and it's time to prepare your balcony garden for the colder months ahead. Here’s how you can ensure your little green refuge thrives even in the chill: Select Suitable Plants: Some plants are more suited to cooler temperatures. Opt for hardy vegetables like kale, spinach, and arugula, or try growing root vegetables such as carrots and radishes which can tolerate the cold. Planting Schedule: It’s crucial to start your winter crops at the right time. Check local planting calendars to make sure you’re sowing your seeds at the optimal time to ensure they mature before the frost sets in. Protect Your Greens: Cold winds and frost can damage plants. Consider using burlap or horticultural fleece to cover your plants, and think about investing in some cloches or a cold frame to shield them from harsh weather. Regular Care: Even during winter, it's important to maintain your garden. Monitor soil moisture, as plants need less water in colder weather, but don’t let them dry out completely. Keep an eye out for pests that might seek shelter in your plants during the winter. Prepare the Space: Clean your balcony, remove any dead plants or debris, and organize your pots and planters to maximize exposure to sunlight. This can make a big difference in how well your plants withstand the cold. 📅 Start now, and make sure your balcony garden remains a lush, tranquil spot for you to enjoy throughout the winter season. Happy gardening! 🌱💚 #WinterGardening #BalconyGarden #UrbanGardening #SustainableLiving #Jocondo_io
