Duran Duran's keyboard Nick Rhodes mentions Star Walk as his favourite app:

“It’s brilliant, and if you’re ever somewhere with a clear sky and no light pollution, it’s a revelation. It’s beautifully designed and makes clever use of the available technology. I’m fascinated by astronomy, but even if you’re not, give this a go.”

Key features:

• Night sky map with thousands of stars, constellations and other sky objects.
• Real-time tracking of celestial bodies.
• Augmented reality sky view.
• Deep sky objects to explore in detail.
• Night mode.
• Extensive information about all sky objects.
• The ability to travel in time with “Time machine”
• Astronomical calendar with various celestial events.

Star walks the best. I’ve had it forever.

Star walk is the best. I’ve had it forever. If it was the ONLY thing my iPhone could do I’d be thrilled beyond belief we are so spoiled these days with amazing tech. Thank you to star-walks creators! I don’t care how much they are pad to make this app, in my regard it counts as public service. The best! Why no one actually talks about it I do nit know.

I’m a professional astronomer I guess. Well I’m an astrophysics student. Let me be clear, You need zero astrophysics to use this app. You just need to like looking up and down and all around. Because the stars are all around us. One of my favorite things to do with my kids is to put my phone on its car mount and drive around our little neighborhood with star wall on in overlay mode so the can see that it’s us here on earth moving. Not the stars. Perspectively as we turn our heads and spin on our axis. You can see all the stars still. Below the horizon having just set or about to rise.

Thank you star work. Enough fun overlay artwork to keep and child interested. Or the child like - like we all are when we look up!

Too difficult to read

Maybe it’s a bad setting or something but I find the data in the app very hard to read. When I first got the app several years ago it was fine but it keeps getting “prettier” and less useful. For one thing, object labels are missing if they are near the edge of the screen. As you get them closer to the center their labels show up as an unreadable gray. Finally, when they are almost in the center they are in a tiny but somewhat readable white font. Why aren’t they white all the time? If you’re using the app to try and find something you have to center the thing first. That’s hard to do if you don’t know where it is. Another hard thing to see is the horizon. It’s very subtly darker than the sky. Why not make it better defined? The planets are hard to find too. The pretty icons on the map can help but the red text is too dark against the black background. Things near the galactic equator are hard because the Milky Way image is much too bright. Finally, the new moon is shown as black. OK, it really is but if you’re trying to find it, good luck. If you center where this invisible object is, of course, then you may be able to spot the tiny white label. It would hurt the prettiness, I guess, but I’d love to see a white outline on it. Finally, this is the slowest app I have when I start it. It has pretty little animations of its name for a good 10 seconds. I didn’t get it for that. Basically it sacrifices utility for aesthetics.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. There are a plenty of objects shown on the screen at the same time, if all of them was labeled, you wouldn't be able to read anything. So the stars are not labeled unless selected, but planets, satellites, meteor showers and the Sun and the Moon are labeled permanently, except the case when a satellite goes 2/3 off the screen area. Planets (the Moon as well) can be easily spotted if follow the ecliptic or with the search option (the magnifier in the lower left corner of the screen). Your remarks on the fonts color and size are greatly appreciated and will be taken into consideration. The launch time depends on your hardware solution, on A9 and higher cpu it takes about 2 seconds, on A8 – about 5 seconds.

Great App

This app is amazing, I like how you can switch the views to look at the stars. It doesn’t have that many adds considering that it’s free. Although you do need premium to look at definitions and descriptions on some satellites and stuff you can just search it up on google if it’s that interesting. I personally just have it to look at the stars but it’s interesting to learn about the stars when you tap on them. There are so many more things about this app that you can do and that’s only for the free version. If you get this app then I recommend getting the premium. It’ll give you a better experience of the app. Overall this is a great app and I plan on using it for a long while,
